With these hot days of summer and spending them at the beach to cool off, I wanted to share a fun idea to do with your baby. This is a safe way to introduce them to the fun of the beach without them trying to eat the real sand at the actual beach. The times I have seen babies eat sand, it always makes me nervous and luckily my own son really wasn’t into eating sand but seeing that other babies do, made me want to share this idea. Miss Tara R.

Edible Beach Sand
- Boxes of corn meal
- Plastic bin /Rubbermaid bin big enough to fit your baby/toddler
- Kiddie pool if you have
- Sand toys/bucket/shovel
If you want to make it a sensory bin, you could include a plastic hermit crab, seashells or starfish.
** Please note that these are not meant to be put in their mouths and aren’t edible. Never leave your baby unattended. **
|
|
Just pour the boxes of corn meal into the bin. If you want your child to sit on the “sand”, then purchase more boxes of corn meal and chose a plastic bin that is big enough to do that. If you have a kiddie pool, that works great as well. If you only have a small bin then you can turn it into a sensory bin for their hands only.
Once the corn meal is in the bin, then add any sensory beach things you may have like the seashells or a plastic hermit crab. Let them dig their hands into the “sand”. Add water with their bucket and they can make a sand castle! If the bin is big enough, let them dig their toes and wiggle their feet in the corn meal sand too!

Thanks to handsonaswegrow.com for this scavenger hunt idea! Not only is it simple, but it ties in literacy with fun. Children are finding objects of different colors, while learning to associate the written word with that color as well. Using a light-colored pad of sticky notes, and some different colored markers or crayons, write color words, in their own colors, on individual sticky notes. Your child can then choose a sticky note, find something that color, and stick the note on it! Keep going until all the notes are used up, then have your child collect the notes and start again, finding different objects. Every time your child looks at the word/color, it helps to form that association between the written word and its meaning. - Ms. Debbie D.
