School is "out" now, but with a summer unlike any in our recent memory, kids are still at home while adults are trying to telework. Good books to the rescue! If you are on the hunt for fun and entertaining reading that is also educational, we've discovered a great children's book about the travels of a plastic bag.

Bag in the Wind by Ted Kooser teaches readers about waste, reuse, and recycling. It includes facts and action items specific to the problems of single-use plastic bags. It's a timely read as we head into Plastic Free July, a month-long, global campaign to reduce plastic waste and pollution. See more about the book below.

Eco Partners is sharing a free copy of this book with one lucky reader! We'll draw a random name from all those who enter by Friday, July 10. Just send us an email with Bag in the Wind in the subject line and tell us how you "choose to refuse" single-use plastic bags. Feel free to include any plans to participate in Plastic Free July, too!

How is plastic bag waste handled in your community? We would love to work with you to communicate this and other information about solid waste programs in the community you serve. Just g ive me a call or email me

Keep those bags out of the wind (and waste stream)!

A bag in the wind tells a story
Writing a compelling saga about an inanimate object like a plastic bag may seem far-fetched. However, that is exactly what Ted Kooser does with his book, Bag in the Wind (Candlewick Press, 44 pages).

This feat seems more plausible once you learn that Kooser is a past U.S. Poet Laurate and Pulitzer Prize winner. Along with illustrations by Barry Root, Kooser's text will engage any youngster's imagination.

Without noticing, readers and listeners alike will learn about waste, reuse, and recycling. Litter, poverty, and homelessness are also touched upon, as well as kindness and charity. Goal-setting plays a major role in a surprising plot twist. Readers really will care about this bag and want to see how the story ends.

Like any good children's book, it educates as it entertains and instills values as it provides an opportunity for shared quality time. Read our full review and a Q & A with Ted Kooser.
