Join AIA Central Oklahoma for our AIA June Luncheon set to take place on Thursday, June 10th at the Capitol View Event Center located at 5201 N. Lincoln Blvd. The June Luncheon program will be The National Guard Armory, the Future Home of Coop Ale Works.
When the former National Guard Armory at 200 NE 23 came up for sale Coop Ale works jumped at the chance to revive a part of Oklahoma’s history and create a place the community can be proud of.

When the former National Guard Armory at 200 NE 23 came up for sale Coop Ale works jumped at the chance to revive a part of Oklahoma’s history and create a place the community can be proud of.
The armory was built in 1935, was once home to the 45th Infantry and National Guard. It was vacated by 2010. The cavernous former armory, spanning 72,667 square feet, was seen as a potentially awkward fit for most development possibilities due to its design. The bulk of the interior is just the ground floor with the roof three stories above. Floors line the east and west sides of the building overlooking the space.
That design, however, was seen as ideal for an expanded COOP Ale Works brewery that will be transformed into a visitor destination with the side offices turned into a boutique hotel. The proposal called for 16 hotel rooms overlooking the production floor with the opposite side of the building to be home to a restaurant and event venue.
Coop Ale Works hired Spur Design as the architect for the project. Join Daniel Mercer of Coop Ale Works and Seth Cavin, AIA of Spur Design to learn more about this fascinating project!

Daniel Mercer is a Yukon native who has spent most of his life in Oklahoma City and its surrounds. He graduated from OCU, began his career in venture capital and made several transitions throughout two decades, including consulting, flying in the US Air Force, corporate finance and, most recently, beer. Mr. Mercer co-founded COOP Ale Works in 2008 with a goal of creating a production brewery Oklahoma City would be proud of. He led the company through its 2014 expansion and is currently spearheading COOP’s $28 million renovation and expansion of the historic 23rd Street National Guard Armory. |

Seth Cavin, AIA is the founding principal and owner of Spur Design. He is a licensed architect and currently serves as President for the Central Oklahoma Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIACOC). Seth has been married for 17 years to his fabulous wife, Erin and has three amazing children and an overly-dependent dog. Seth started Spur Design in 2008, taking the best of experiences from his time at other firms in Oklahoma City and Kansas City to create a fun, focused, and efficient work environment which embraces investment and growth of staff into future firm leadership. Under his leadership and direction over the last 13 years, Spur Design has grown to 60+ employees who provide Architecture, Interior Design, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, and Cost Estimating services through their Oklahoma City, Kansas City, and Phoenix offices.
The deadline to register for the June AIA Luncheon is Friday, June 4th. AIA, Associate AIA and Allied Members attend free. The cost for nonmembers is $30.

Join in on a fun brainstorming session: We'll outline a Central Oklahoma adaptation of AIA's Framework for Design Excellence, mirroring the "If you can do just one thing" sections. What is the purpose of doing this? Glad you asked! This event launches an AIACOC COTE outreach project that positions AIACOC Architects as experts in resilience, sustainability and community building. More details over coffee!
This will be a casual event where participation in the discussion is encouraged. So swing by on your way to the office - light snacks and lots of really good [regular] coffee will be on hand, or bring your own if you prefer - but do sign up, as space limits us to 20 participants.

Experience Architecture Volunteers Needed |
|
This program is open to Oklahoma High School students who will be entering their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year during the 2021- 2022 school year.
We are currently looking for Mentors for the program. The Experience Architecture Committee will be "teaching" the programs each day but we'll need mentors to mentor the students as they work on their project. Time commitment is an hour each morning and an hour each afternoon for the week of the program. We will need two mentors per group. If you're interested, please email Melissa at aiacoc@cox.net.

Since February, höffnerdesignstudio has been host to OU Gibbs College of Architecture students Reilly Tuer and Kyler Smith. Tuer and Smith are fulfilling their internship semester by doing a project with the City of Edmond that carries forward an Institute for Quality Communities (IQC) initial report. Thanks to funding from IQC, the students are able to have paid internships while working in a professional setting, on a project with real stakes, and for a real client.
The intent of our project is “Activating Alleys.” Fola Salami and Ken Bryan , both of Edmond Planning Department, familiarized us with the alleys and a vision to make them lively, and pedestrian and bicycle safe, while supporting mixed use development. City Councilman David Chapman further emphasized that the City of Edmond understands the need to try a new approach to attracting young people to Edmond and retain them.
In response, the students imagined a place where people could live and work in a forward thinking development. Cars would be secondary to walking and cycling. A multimodal transit hub makes it possible to develop a spine that is at once connective tissue, and an armature for play, commerce, and daily life.
The students’ final report was extremely well received at their presentations both to City of Edmond stakeholders and faculty at the College of Architecture and IQC. Despite being done with fulfilling their internship requirements, the students were motivated to keep going forward. Permission was secured to realize their design in the form of a “tactical urbanism” project; to mock up some elements of their work so people can get a preliminary taste of “The Tracks.”
Painting took place in a day long push led by the students and höffner, together with numerous volunteers, largely from OU College of Architecture. On Thursday, the project will be enlivened with music, pop-up stores, lighting and outdoor seating. During this trial run, volunteers will gather data through behavior mapping and handing out surveys.
“The Tracks” is a collateral project that will take place during the Edmond VIBES art walk on Thursday, June 3 from 5 PM until 10 PM in the alley west of Broadway between W 1st and W Main.

AIA Central States Design Awards Hosted by AIA Kansas |

The AIA Central States Region Design Excellence Awards recognizes outstanding architecture coming from the region of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.
Entries must be designed by AIA CSR members or must be projects completed within the Central States Region and designed by a fellow AIA member.
Award recipients will be publicly announced during the Virtual AIA Kansas | AIA Central States Region Design Excellence Awards Celebration on Thursday, October 7, 2021.
Submissions are due July 23, 2021
