The Practice of Insight Dialogue at Triangle Insight

Insight Dialogue is an interpersonal meditation practice and is offered at Triangle Insight once monthly, usually on the fourth Wednesday of the month. It brings the mindfulness and tranquility of silent meditation directly into our experience with other people.

Bodhisattva, Kyoto, Japan

An excellent resource for learning more about the

practice is the new website for Insight Dialogue: www.insightdialogue.org

The evening begins with silent meditation practice, followed by gentle mindful movement, and then shifting into dyad practice where interpersonal mindfulness is explored with a partner in response to a contemplation that is offered. The dyad practice is optional so that anyone who chooses to remain in silent practice may do so, rather than shifting into dyad practice. One can investigate the guidance of the contemplation internally, noticing the moment by moment unfolding of internal experience. Note that the ID practice goes from 6:30 to 8:00 pm while meeting on Zoom. When it is possible to resume in-person meetings the time will return to 8:30 pm, to allow for more spaciousness and time for questions. We hope you will be able to join us.

EcoSattva Training

A LOCAL 8-week Course in Response to Ecological Challenges

Carolyn Bruckner is the Triangle Insight facilitator

Triangle Insight is a local host for this 8-part series of deeply interactive learning and sharing sessions, designed to hone skills for effective activism and inner wisdom.

November update:

You can still join as a participant . "Materials are available now. Start when you like and move at your own pace."

  • Come gather with other Triangle Insight sangha participants online to discover insights from multiple Dharma traditions and the growing field of climate psychology, explore our edges, meet what arises in us, and discover our authentic paths forward. Co-facilitators may emerge from the group, if desired.

  • Developed by One Earth Sangha, a sister Insight community, we will challenge views and patterns that contribute to suffering, individually and collectively. This includes inquiring into intersections and common roots of ecological harm and other forms of objectification and exploitation, especially in regard to race. Finally, we will explore the diverse forms of response available to us as we move forward.

Registration is for EIGHT 90-minute online sessions, pre-scheduled as Triangle Insight EcoSattva Group.  START: Tuesday, October 25 at 7:00 pm, then weekly through December 20. Note: access to Session 1 materials begins October 9th.

In addition, participants have access to live donation-based monthly gatherings with leaders from across Western Dharma traditions (held second Sunday of each month). RSVP separately. The first of these meetings is Weathering the Storms, an EcoDharma Exploration and Ecosattva Training kickoff gathering. Sunday, October 16, 11am –1:00pm EST.

Welcome Committee

Sangha means spiritual community, and it is treasured because without it awakening cannot be sustained. –Jack Kornfield, After the Ecstasy, the Laundry

The Welcome Committee wishes to foster the experience of belonging to a diverse, tolerant community connected through mindfulness practice, where all feel welcome and safe. We seek to link all participants and newcomers to ongoing activities and to ensure the Zoom connection is available. You are welcome to Visit our Webpage!

Kalyana Mitta (Spiritual Friends) Groups

Having admirable people as friends, companions, and colleagues is actually

the whole of the holy life. - The Buddha

New Durham Kalyana Mitta Group

A recently formed Durham KM group is open to new members.

If you’re interested or would like more information,

please visit our "List of KM Groups" web page, or

contact Sarah Tillis, KM Coordinator, at sarah@triangleinsight.org.

While much of our practice is solitary, it is in relationships that we find both challenges and opportunities for our spiritual development. As Tara Brach notes in The Winds of Love: Taking Refuge in Conscious Relationship, “Relationships can be place of healing and awakening, a sacred refuge. We can learn to share our truths, hold space for each other, and look behind the mask to see the one who longs to love and be loved. Sharing our own vulnerability and learning to see the inherent goodness in others are some of the most beautiful practices I know for waking up with each other.”

Our KM groups provide a special opportunity for this relational practice. With the group’s care and mindful sharing, we deepen our understanding, our hearts soften, and we move from judgment and separation to compassion and connection. A beautiful aspect of this process is that as the heart of the dharma is enriched in our own lives, we are contributing to the spiritual journey of others. This is the gift of the third jewel of sangha, a jewel that illuminates this path we travel together.

KM Groups

We currently have openings in our Durham, Raleigh, and Sutta Study groups. Our Chapel Hill-Carrboro group has a waiting list. Details about each of our groups are on our "List of KM Groups" web page.

Information about our KM program and links to helpful resources are on our KM web page. If you’d like more information, or you want to join a group, be on a waiting list, or start a new group, please contact Sarah Tillis, KM Coordinator at sarah@triangleinsight.org.

The KM Coordinating Team of Sarah Tillis and Tamara Share expresses deep gratitude for the dedication of our sangha.

May our Kalyana Mitta groups be of great benefit to all.

Racial Affinity Groups

A message from Triangle Insight Racial Affinity Group Coordinator, Kathy Shipp

We have an opportunity to grow when we share with our TI spiritual friends about how race and “othering” affects us on every level: personal, organizational, and societal. We have Racial Affinity Groups (RAGs) in which you can discuss how racial conditioning affects your life. There are online training sessions to attend, such as the Organizing Against Racism two-day on-line workshop

  • The Organizing Against Racism two-day workshop is scheduled twice each month through the end of the year; one of these dates may work for you.
  • To learn about financial aid for one of these workshops, see the Financial Support section below.

Please contact me at kathy@triangleinsight.org if you are interested in exploring or joining a RAG, if you are interested in racial justice training, or simply would like to talk about your sadness and/or rage, now that Buffalo 2022 and Uvalde 2022 have been added to the long list of racially-motivated shootings: at Mother Emanuel AME church in Charleston 2015, the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh 2018, the Walmart in El Paso in 2019, and the spa workers in Atlanta 2021. And, as ever, may our efforts benefit all beings.

Student Research Project on Insight Meditation (PDF DOCUMENT)

Perry Sweitzer, Department of Religion, Duke University

Project Overview

Perry Sweitzer is a Ph.D. candidate in the Graduate Program in Religion at Duke University, and he will be working with Triangle Insight Meditation Community for his dissertation research. Perry’s project is focused on understanding the lived experience of American Buddhism in general and Insight meditation in particular.

Research questions include:

  • How do practitioners come to the practice?
  • What has their experience of progress or growth along the path been like?
  • What difficulties or challenges do they encounter?
  • What difference does the practice make “off the cushion” in everyday life?
  • How is Insight meditation, and the broader Buddhist teachings of which it is a part, taught and learned?
  • What difference do small groups, like racial affinity or spiritual friends' groups, make for those involved?

To answer these, Perry will attend and participate in sangha events like the Wednesday evening meetings and conduct individual interviews so that he can better understand individual stories and experiences.

Participation in the research project is voluntary. TIMC participants who indicate that they are willing to be interviewed will receive additional information about the research project, types of interview questions they may be asked, and measures to protect their privacy during the informed consent process. Perry will also be learning to practice Insight meditation and hopes that this first-hand participation will lead to a richer understanding of meditators’ experiences.

Research Liaison Team and Safeguards

Cornelia Kip Lee, Cynthia Hughey, and Karen Kingsolver will serve as the liaison team between Perry and the Triangle Insight Meditation Community. In addition to being a resource to Perry as he starts his project, they are available to the community to respond to questions or concerns about the research as well as to ensure specific safeguards are in place to make this project the best experience for all involved.

Four safeguards are especially important:

  1.  Perry has been given permission to attend and take notes during the Wednesday evening sangha meeting. He will never record any identifying information without explicit permission. In other words, participation in the project is anonymous.
  2. If someone does not want to participate in the project in any form, even anonymously, they can contact the liaison, who will then notify Perry.
  3. To make sure that the Wednesday night gathering is a space that remains safe and welcoming, someone who feels uncomfortable with Perry’s presence during a particular event can contact the liaison to anonymously request that Perry leave the event. The liaison will then notify Perry.
  4. Should Perry wish to participate in other Triangle Insight Meditation Community activities (e.g., morning meditation, study groups/classes, retreats, special events, etc.), he will contact the person in charge and/or the participants to receive permission to attend as well as to ensure that the above safeguards are made known and followed.

Community Connections Committee

A TIMC Initiative connecting and strengthening the bonds of our shared practice.

At Triangle Insight, one Wednesday evening per season is designated as a dana night for a specific local organization. As an expression of our heart practice and generosity, the Community Connections Committee (CCC) is recommending this organization, Religious Coalition for Nonviolent Durham (RCND), receive a donation in lieu of dana to TIMC for the fall season. The next dana night will be November 9th

  • RCND is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that invites people of faith and goodwill to stand alongside those most affected by violence through vigil ministry among surviving loved ones of homicide victims, support circles for citizens returning from incarceration, and restorative justice practices that repair the harm caused by wrongdoing. Their mission is to prevent and rectify the injustice of violence that segregates our city and diminishes our humanity.

You can learn more about Religious Coalition for Nonviolent Durham, and donations can be offered at https://www.nonviolentdurham.org

You can also find information on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/NonviolentDurham.

The Community Connections Committee extends gratitude to the Triangle Insight Meditation Community for its generous support to this important organization.

When we resume meeting together at the Episcopal Center, separate baskets will be available on CCC dana nights, so members have the option of where they want to donate.

Financial Support

Available For Training Programs and Workshops in Racial Justice and Diversity

Our goal:

To help individuals and our community deepen the understanding of how unexamined views of race can limit the mind and human systems.

  • A Scholarship Fund for this purpose exists through donations from the TIMC General Fund and the generosity of several Triangle Insight participants.

  • If Triangle Insight sangha participants would like to receive scholarship support for training with OARNC, White Awake, or other programs addressing racial injustice, please email us at: board@triangleinsight.org.

We invite the community to join this initiative by contributing directly to this scholarship fund.

TIMC BOARD | NEWS AND REPORTS

Currently serving on the Board of Directors: Cynthia Hughey, Cornelia "Kip" Lee, Marian Place, Leah Rutchick, Martin Steinmeyer, Ron Vereen.

Note: Given the recent reports of Durham and the surrounding area dropping from the "high risk category" for COVID transmission and infection rates, the board is actively planning another hybrid test meeting at the Episcopal Center (see below).

Board Meetings:

Cornelia "Kip", Cynthia, Leah, Marian, Martin. and Ron convened an Open Meeting of the Board of Directors on October 12, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. on the Zoom platform.  Lynn Shapiro was present as a sangha participant.

The October Meeting began  with a 10 minute meditation session. Board members recited the Communication Guidelines and approved the minutes from the September 14, 2022 Meeting after some agreed-upon corrections.

  • The board had further discussion on the website redesign project, looking at the roles of board members and designers in meeting timelines.  Discussion of language and communication as to whom we are as a community as part of design of the website occurred with no decision reached.

  • The board also discussed the need to attract new board members, and a decision was made to hold a hybrid tea social on November 19th to invite people who may be interested in being on the board.

  • The hybrid sangha meeting planning continues, with Ron and Martin having scheduled a visit to the Episcopal Center on October 15th to give the technical components for the hybrid meeting a trial run.

  • Leah reported on receiving some donated meditation cushions and transported them to the Episcopal Center after some needed cleaning.  The storage closet was noted to be in need of reorganization and cleaning, with discussion about recruiting those from the sangha who would be interested in a day of service to the Episcopal Center for this purpose, date TBD.

  • The board held a discussion about proceeding with our engagement with Peace Hill at Avila and the opportunity we may have in using Avila for future TIMC retreats.  A decision was made to invite 2 directors of the Peace Hill Board to make a presentation at our next board meeting.  The board will send out an email to the sangha about this meeting along with notifying them of two upcoming Peace Hill events.

The October Meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m.

Join us for the next open board meeting, on Zoom. The date is Saturday, November 19, 12 –2 p.m.  You can join us at any time during the meeting. A Zoom invite will be sent to newsletter members in the week prior. If you have a presentation you would like to give to the board, please contact us at board@triangleinsight.org and we'll make every effort to include that in the agenda.
