New on the CNS Blog: Beyond the Science: 4 Lessons Learned from the Kanwisher Award Talk

Hearing from luminaries in a scientist's field can have many benefits, as I learned during this year's CNS conference. As this year's recipient of the George A. Miller Prize in Cognitive Neuroscience, Nancy Kanwisher had the difficult job of delivering an effective award lecture over video conference. Despite the virtual format, her enthusiasm for research permeated throughout her lecture titled "Functional imaging of the human brain: A window into the organization of the human mind." It became obvious to me why Kanwisher was receiving this award, which recognizes people whose research has revolutionized the field of cognitive neuroscience. Her wealth of experience in the field offers rich lessons to graduate students like me. Re-watching her lecture via the "On Demand Video" feature, I homed in on four insights that went beyond her research, including the value of deep questions, the need to know the literature well, the power of collaboration, and the need for ongoing learning. **** CALL FOR ILLUSION SUBMISSIONS: THE WORLD'S 16TH ANNUAL BEST ILLUSION OF THE YEAR CONTEST****

We are happy to announce the 16th edition of world's Best Illusion of the YearSM Contest!! Submissions are now welcome!  
In 2015, the Best Illusion of the YearSM Contest became an annual online event, with the goal of bringing the creativity of the illusion creator community all around the world. Anybody with an internet connection can now participate! No matter where you live, you can be a contestant, and/or vote for the Top 3 winners!

We thank the Museum of Mind, Gold Sponsor of the 2020 Best Illusion of the Year Contest, for its generous support. 

Contestants are invited to submit 1-minute YouTube or mp4 videos featuring novel illusions (unpublished, or published no earlier than 2019) of all sensory modalities (visual, auditory, etc.) and/or cognitive nature.

The content of the 1-minute video presenting your illusion is solely up to you, and the only requirement is that it wows all viewers! Some examples include, but are not limited to:

* A slide presentation, or succession of images, with a voice over (and/or written text, if you prefer)
* A video of yourself describing your illusion
* A video animation/theatrical performance of your illusion

An international panel of impartial judges will rate all the videos and narrow them down to the Top 10. Then, online voters around the world will choose their favorite illusions from the Top 10 finalists. All Top 10 finalists will receive a commemorative plaque. In addition, the Top 3 winners will receive cash prizes: $3,000 USD for first place; $2,000 USD for second place, and $1,000 USD for third place.

The Judge Panel will rate illusions according to:

* Significance to our understanding of the human mind and brain
* Simplicity of the description
* Sheer beauty
* Counterintuitive quality
* Spectacularity

Submissions will be held in strict confidence by the Judge Panel. Only the Top 10 illusions will be posted online, to allow worldwide voting. Participation in the Best Illusion of the YearSM Contest does not preclude you from also submitting your work for publication elsewhere. By participating in the Best Illusion of the YearSM Contest you agree to have your illusion posted on the Contest website, if selected among the Top 10, and included in press releases and other promotional materials/fundraising initiatives for the Contest. You (and your co-authors, if appropriate) will retain the full copyright of your illusion and receive full credit as illusion creator(s).

Illusions submitted to previous editions of the contest can be re-submitted to the 2020 Contest, as long as they meet the above requirements and were not among the Top 10 finalists in previous years.

The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain) offers Research Professor & Research Associate positions in seven main broad areas or research:

The Center promotes a rich research environment without substantial teaching obligations. It provides access to the most advanced behavioral and neuroimaging techniques, including 3 Tesla MRI, a whole-head MEG system, four ERP labs, a NIRS lab, a baby lab including an eyetracker, two eyetracking labs, and several well-equipped behavioral labs. There are excellent technical support staff and research personnel (PhD and postdoctoral students).

We are looking for cognitive neuroscientists or experimental psychologists with a background in psycholinguistics and/or neighboring cognitive neuroscience areas, computational modelers, and physicists and/or engineers with fMRI/MEG expertise.

These permanent positions are for researchers willing to develop a long-term scientific career in the Basque Country. This call is open both to stablished researchers as Research Associates, with 8 to 12 years of postdoctoral experience; and senior leading researchers as Research Professors, with longer research experience. Postdoctoral Position in Electrophysiology of Human Memory

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NIH

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is seeking a full-time post-doctoral position focused on understanding the neural correlates of human memory. This position involves studies focused on analyzing and manipulating human intracranial electrophysiological signals, including single-unit activity, local field potentials, and electrocorticography (ECoG), captured from patients with medically refractory epilepsy and from patients receiving deep brain stimulation surgery. Post-doctoral fellows will join a laboratory aimed at understanding the neural mechanisms that underlie human episodic memory formation and decision making and at developing novel and innovative techniques to directly communicate with those circuits.

We are seeking candidates that are highly creative, motivated, and independent with a Ph.D. in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or a related field. Candidates must have a strong research background, with a record of relevant publications. Candidates will be encouraged and expected to participate in independent laboratory research, and will be expected to write scholarly manuscripts. Candidates must be able to lead and work well in a team. Candidates should have strong computational, quantitative, and/or engineering skills, with proficiency in developing custom code (Matlab, Python, etc.) for data analysis preferred. Past medical research is not required, but candidates must be willing to perform experiments in a clinical setting. Candidates will interact with clinical staff, graduate students, research fellows, and must have excellent spoken and written English skills.

Explorations Into Human Brain Aging

Start date: August 1, 2020.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship under the direction of Professor Randy Buckner in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to contribute to research exploring brain aging that includes extensive measurements of the brain structure and function collected through neuroimaging and analysis of existing data sets to chart normal and clinical brain aging. Work will be conducted within the Harvard Center for Brain Science.

Strong applicants will have:

*A background in psychology, neuroscience, statistics, genetics or computer science.

*Experience using advanced statistical and modeling approaches to neuroimaging data analysis.

*Extensive background in data analysis including overcoming statistical challenges.

*Demonstrated ability to complete projects as evidenced by first-author publications.

*Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

*Programming skills (Matlab, Python, R, SPM, FSL, AFNI, or similar platforms).

*Data visualization skills.

Postdoctoral Fellow: Cognitive Neuroscience of Semantics. A post-doctoral research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Rutvik Desai at the University of South Carolina, Department of Psychology. The lab focuses on cognitive neuroscience of language, semantic memory, and embodiment of concepts using neuroimaging, brain stimulation, patient studies, lesion-symptom mapping, and computational modeling. Excellent facilities for fMRI, TMS, tDCS, and eye tracking are available. The Fellow will have an exciting opportunity to pursue collaborative and self-directed projects at the Institute for Mind and Brain (http://mindandbrain.sc.edu/).

Candidates with a PhD in any of the cognitive sciences (e.g., Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science) are welcome to apply. A research background in cognitive neuroscience/cognitive science, relevant to semantic or language processing, is required. Expertise with fMRI (including MVPA), or brain stimulation (TMS or tDCS) is required. Experience in one or more of lesion-symptom mapping, behavioral testing or imaging of patient populations, EEG, connectionist modeling, or machine learning is also a positive, along with skills in programming and statistics (e.g., Python, Matlab, R). Salary will be commensurate with experience. The Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (PI: Maital Neta) invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher (start date negotiable). The lab uses neuroimaging (fMRI, resting state fMRI), psychophysiology, behavioral techniques, and network analyses to examine individual differences in emotion processing and emotion regulation.

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field and have a strong publication record that includes neuroimaging studies, preferably with a focus on using fMRI to examine theoretically relevant questions in cognitive psychology and emotion in particular. Candidates with substantial prior experience with advanced MRI methods (e.g., resting state MRI, MVPA, network modeling), and with eye tracking are uniquely attractive. Strong technical skills are preferred, including competence in several programming environments, and familiarity with programs such as E- prime, SPSS, R, Matlab, Python, AFNI, SPM, FSL, and Unix is especially valued but not required and otherwise would be learned on the job.

The lab is funded by the NIMH and NSF, and is housed in the Center for Brain, Biology, & Behavior at UNL (http://cb3.unl.edu/), which has a state-of-the-art Brain Imaging Center and a 3T MRI scanner dedicated for research. Beyond having access to the scanner, the postdoctoral fellow will also have access to with EEG/ERP, fNIRS, tDCS, virtual reality, mobile psychophysiology, eye-tracking (many of which can be measured both in and out of the MRI scanner), as well as several other cutting-edge techniques.

Lab Manager Position in the Bakkour Lab at The University of

The laboratory of Akram Bakkour will be established in the Department of Psychology at The University of Chicago in July 2020. We are searching for a Lab Manager to join the team. Research in the Bakkour Memory and Decision Lab (www.akrambakkour.com) focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms by which memory contributes to and is influenced by decision-making. The research tools and techniques used by the Bakkour Lab include behavioral studies (in person and online), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), eyetracking, and neuropsychological studies in special patient populations (e.g., amnesic patients, patients with Parkinson's Disease, and patients with eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa). 

We seek a Lab Manager to help establish the new lab in Chicago both administratively and scientifically. This individual will help develop and oversee compliance policies and protocols (IRBs), order and set up lab equipment and supplies, recruit participants (including patients in coordination with clinical units), maintain participant records (e.g., consent forms, screening forms), help design and maintain the lab website, schedule lab meetings, and perform other day-to-day lab management tasks. In addition to these administrative responsibilities, this individual will also conduct research under the guidance and supervision of the Principal Investigator, including an independent project (which will involve conceptualization, data collection, analysis, presentation of results, writing, and paper submission). Other research responsibilities include training and assisting lab members with data collection and technical troubleshooting. This is a particularly exciting opportunity for someone who wants to be part of a growing team where they are valued for their scientific as well as their managerial contribution. This position will provide useful training for individuals who are considering graduate school.

This is a one-year position, but a commitment of two years is strongly preferred. There will be the possibility of renewal on a yearly basis beyond the initial two years. The start date will ideally be between 7/1/2020 and 10/1/2020. Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

The successful applicant must be eligible to work in the United States and have a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, or a related field. Candidates must have strong technical qualifications including proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, JavaScript, MATLAB), working knowledge of statistics (e.g., running basic statistical tests in R, Python, Julia), and fluency in office productivity software (e.g., word processor, slide presentations, spreadsheets). Candidates must be organized and detail-oriented, able to exercise good judgement and take initiative, able to work independently as well as collaboratively, and possess excellent communication skills. Knowledge of human research protocols (IRBs, consent forms, HIPAA) is preferred, but not required. Prior research experience (especially in a cognitive neuroscience lab studying memory and/or decision making) is also preferred.

Research Assistant Position

The Spatial Cognition and Navigational Neuroscience (SCANN) Laboratory at the University of Florida, directed by Dr. Steven Weisberg, is hiring a full-time lab manager / research technician / programmer to help conduct research related to the cognitive neuroscience of spatial navigation. The SCANN lab uses behavioral cognitive psychology methods in desktop and immersive virtual reality, structural MRI, and univariate and multivariate approaches to fMRI data to determine the behavioral and neural underpinnings of human navigation behavior. The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical and organizational support to the lab. The lab manager will also have the opportunity to be a collaborator in research that will be presented at conferences and published in journals. Technical and organizational skills are a significant plus.

The position requires a 1-year commitment and can be renewed dependent on funding availability. Preferred start date is August 15, 2020, but is negotiable. European Conference on Eye Movements

This is a belated announcement of the published abstracts from the 2019 European Conference on Eye Movements (ECEM), hosted in Alicante, Spain. Please find below the Contents Alert of the corresponding Special Issue of the Journal of Eye Movements Research. Note that this special issue contains video streams of the keynote lectures and symposia presentations, which might serve as introductions to expanding fields of research.
