Report: Ending Conflicts Over Water: Solutions to Water and Security Challenges
|
Water-related conflict and political instability are on the rise across the globe, but relatively few solutions have been presented. This report from the Pacific Institute, World Resources Institute, and the Water, Peace and Security Partnership fills the gap by exploring several dozen strategies to reduce water-related conflicts in key water-insecure hotspots around the world. The solutions are organized into four broad categories: natural resources, science, and engineering approaches; political and legal tools; economic and financial tools; and policy and governance strategies.

Pacific Institute at Climate Week NYC 2020

The focus of this year’s Climate Week NYC 2020 last week was rebuilding after the COVID-19 pandemic using lessons learned from the crisis to pursue an equitable transition to a net-zero future. The business sector has a vital role to play in this transition. With this in mind, the Pacific Institute joined in the action last week with sessions focused on the role of the business sector in advancing water resilience and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

"Adaptation options include changing zoning laws, forest management, construction practices and building materials, insurance policies, and public health strategies," explains Dr. Gleick.

The Pacific Institute is Co-Secretariat of the CEO Water Mandate, a UN Global Compact initiative that mobilizes business leaders on water, sanitation, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Water Resilience Coalition, an industry-driven, CEO-led initiative of the CEO Water Mandate, last week launched the social media awareness campaign “Water is Resilience: A Call for Collective Action on Water Access,” in partnership with WaterAid. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the critical role water and handwashing play in the global response to COVID-19 and water resilience more broadly, through the hashtag #WaterIsResilience.
