Looking Ahead: Taizé Prayer on October 26

Our monthly fourth Friday Taizé service, which provides an opportunity to gather in a contemplative, prayerful setting, will take place this coming Friday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel.

Candles; easy-to-learn songs from various countries, traditions, and languages; and a period of silence all contribute to this time to reflect and open oneself to God.

This Sunday, a new monthly Academy for Faith and Life adult education class begins at 9:30 a.m. in Room 5G: “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Bible or Your Money Back (A Free Class).”

Led by Rocky Supinger and Matt Helms, this monthly class will mix biblical storytelling, historical context, literary analysis, and small-group discussion to help bring the biblical text to life and wrestle with what it means for us today. Come bring any question you’ve ever had about the Bible!

The following Sunday, October 28, two new classes will begin: “Death, Dying, and Human Dignity,” a four-week class led by Michael DeVries at 9:30 a.m., and “Doxology: Hymns and the Christian Tradition,” a three-week class with John Sherer and Shawn Fiedler at 12:10 p.m.

For those who have experienced loss, a Grief Group will begin Monday evening, October 29. To sign up (required), contact our Replogle Center for Counseling and Well-Being at 312.787.8425.

Men’s Book Club , which meets on the fourth Monday of every month at 7:30 a.m. in Parish House Dining Room, will discuss The Soul of America by Jon Meacham this Monday, October 22. On November 26 conversation will focus on The Sword and the Scimitar by Raymond Ibrahim.

Women at Fourth have their monthly gathering this coming Thursday, October 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the Bumpus Room. In honor of LGBT History, Shawn Fiedler, Nanette Sawyer, and Anne Ellis will share coming-out stories and the intersection with their faith.

Cornerstones, a group of those fifty and over, will come together on November 2 for fellowship, dinner, and a program on “Improving and Protecting Our Great Chicago River” presented by Sally Fletcher, Board Chair of Friends of the Chicago River. Registration for this event , which will begin at 6:00 p.m. in Borwell Dining Room, is required by Wednesday, October 31.

Next Sunday, October 28 is Commitment Sunday!

If you have not yet submitted your pledge to “Called to Be a Church Alive,” our 2019 Annual Appeal for Fourth Presbyterian Church and Chicago Lights, please do make your pledge by next Sunday.

During worship that day we will dedicate our pledges to the work of God’s kingdom and recommit ourselves to actively participating in God’s re-creating and reconciling work in this world.

A trip to Cuba , led by Nanette Sawyer and Gretchen Wahl, is planned for
May 6–15, 2019. It will provide opportunity to continue our more-than-eighteen-year relationship with First Presbyterian Church of Havana as together we live into our shared faith. The trip application can be completed online and is due by January 15.

A service trip to Guatemala , led by Tom and Sue Schemper, is planned for next summer: August 4–11, 2019. Participants will partner with Common Hope, which works with Guatemalans through programs in education, health care, and housing. The trip application can be completed online and is due by January 15.

This coming Friday, October 26 three of our groups will have lock-ins at Fourth Church: fourth and fifth graders, junior high youth, and senior high youth.
