Harvest is a time and attitude of gratitude for reaping what we have sown. Growing a soul and gardening have many similarities. Tis the season for reflection on what we nurtured and what we neglected. How is your crop yield this year?

I Thought I was politicaclly involved,
but I was only watching.
We complain about the political divide, but what do we "do"?
I read, listen, discuss, and become upset-and while informed, I have not done anything.
Now, through COPA ( https://www.copaiaf.org/), we can become involved with local county supervisors' races in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. For 1.5 hours on Sunday afternoon October 4 th, you can see the candidates answer yes/no questions about local issues.
Showing up isn't just watching-it is participating. Register here COPA Register Here and participate.
Flyer for the event on October 4th here:
I'm helping with logistics of this forum and encourage you to really participate in local politics...............Rev Russ

Join us at a Children's RE Team Meeting
This is a long overdue invitation to join us at an upcoming Children's Religious Exploration team meeting! Did you know there is a RE team that meets every month? Are your curious about what we do and how we make the magic of the RE program happen?
The RE team is currently comprised of 5 volunteers (4 are parents), our 3 teachers, Rev. Russ, and ministerial intern Sangye. Together we develop the program, including program administration (things like hiring and developing paid and volunteer staff), curriculum development, and family outreach and engagement.
In our virtual world, we are meeting on the first Mondays of each month, 5:30-6:30pm. Here are the next 3 meeting dates and Zoom meeting information.

Looking at 2020 CA ballot measures
through an anti-racist lens
Thursday October 8th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm
This meeting is a follow-up to the "How to be an Antiracist" discussion and offers an opportunity to talk about upcoming ballot measures from an anti-racist policy perspective. It is not necessary to have attended the original book group to participate in this follow-up meeting. You are invited to prepare for this by reading The Case for Reparations, an article in The Atlantic by Ta-Nehisi Coates that reviews what Kendi and others are referencing when they talk about an American history of racially based kleptocracy. (Please see link below) In addition, please see the 2020 Ballot Recommendations from the UU Justice Ministry of California: http://uujmca.org/advocacy/economic/2020-ballot-recommendations/

Get Out The Vote
Our seventh principle affirms and promotes the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large. Two programs provide critical opportunities to live out this principle right now. UU the Vote is a phone banking program to promote voting and counter voter suppression in the upcoming election, and Vote Forward is a non-partisan letter writing campaign with similar goals. Whichever fits for you, these two programs offer an opportunity to reach out to voters in states that count in this fall's election. It is only 61 days until Election Day, and many ballots will be cast well before that! To learn more go to www.uuthevote.org and www.votefwd.org. To join a UUFSCC group working on voter outreach, contact Chuck Torrey, charlestorrey@gmail.com.

Shared Plate for October 2020
Center for Farm Worker Families
In October, our Shared Plate Collection will support the Center for Farmworker Families. The mission of the Center is to promote awareness about the difficult life circumstances of farmworker families while proactively inspiring improvement in binational family life both in the United States and Mexico.
Director Dr. Ann Lopez says, "This is the worst season for farmworkers that I have witnessed in the 23 years I have been working with them." She will join us on Zoom on Sunday 10/18 to update us on the devastating impact of the pandemic and fires on the lives of local farmworkers and their families, as well as the ongoing work of the organization.
