Absence
The Virtual Distance Learning option is a quarter-long commitment offered to students who do not feel comfortable attending school due to COVID-related concerns.  This option is not available for in school students who are unexpectedly absent from school for any reason.  If a student is home sick, they are encouraged to rest and recover.  If students would like to keep up with assignments while absent, they are to check Google Classroom for daily work.  Questions may be directed to Kathy Hand in the Studies Office at [email protected].

Updates
Please note that our Return to Learn Plan is an addendum to our Student Handbook.  There are a few items that have been updated to our Return to Learn Plan:

Quick Links

LP-6
York Catholic will also comply with the recommendations of the YAIAA for their athletic teams and programs, including spectators not being permitted to attend games.  Communications to student-athletes and their parents is conducted separately.

LP-8
School tours will take place after hours by appointment only.  York Catholic will continue to allow students to shadow following full YC protocol including COVID screening upon arrival.

LP-12
The school nurse is located in the brand new nurse's office completed August 2020.
The nurse has completed the required Diocesan COVID training.

LP-16
Some students may not be able to wear face coverings for various reasons. If a student has a school-written support plan that should indicate exemption from the mask; or brings a current IEP established at a public school to our school that indicates the same; or has previously-written medical directives on file that indicate the same, then that will suffice for documentation for the waiver.  Any other requests for exemption from the face covering requirement must come in writing from a healthcare professional.

Face coverings are required at all times.  Face covering breaks will be offered during lunch in an environment outside of the classroom.  Students will be properly social distanced during this time.

LP-19 & LP-21
York Catholic will also directly contact parents of those students identified as close contacts.

LP-21
If one student in a cohort is diagnosed with COVID-19, that student and his/her family will quarantine. The same applies for staff. Students or staff who are symptomatic will quarantine until they have fully recovered based on CDC guidelines and until they have fulfilled the quarantine, or until they test negative.  The school will consult with the Secretary for Education and the Board of Health on such matters.

When informed of a positive COVID-19 test among students or staff, the school will:  isolate the affected individual(s) (if at school); inform the parents of the affected student(s) and have the child(ren) picked up immediately (if at school); inform the Office of Catholic Schools and the Board of Health; inform all school staff and parents that there is a case in the school; create a complete contact list for the affected individual; notify those identified as close contacts; and prepare to take the necessary steps for cleaning and quarantine.

MCI-2
York Catholic will follow all current Diocesan guidance regarding norms for attendance at Mass during the COVID-19 pandemic from the Diocesan Office of Divine Worship.  Masses will be offered at staggered times to ensure 6 feet of spacing between all attendees.  Masses will be streamed to homerooms for overflow from the auditorium capacity.  At this time, guests will not be permitted to attend Masses.

Back to School Night
York Catholic's Back to School Night will be held Thursday, September 10, from 6-9 PM. Parents will be COVID screened upon arrival just like their children are each morning, and will go to their child's homeroom.  We will begin with a "setting the stage" discussion for parents regarding ongoing dialogues on talking about race with your children, led by Educational Mentoring and Consulting Services (EMCS) from 6-7 PM. This will be followed by our "meet the teachers" portion of the evening from 7-9 PM where parents will follow their child's class schedule and learn about class expectations. Mask protocol and social distancing will be followed.  We look forward to seeing all of our parents!
School Calendar Change

We have been fortunate to be approved by College Board to administer the SAT exam at York Catholic for YC seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The date, October 14, coincides with the same date our juniors are scheduled to take the PSAT.  Because of this, we have a few school calendar adjustments for October.

Friday, October 9, will now be a full school day instead of a half day.

Monday, October 12, we will still be closed.

Wednesday, October 14, will be a full day for faculty and staff and no school for grades 7-10.  All 11th graders will have a half-day in the morning to take the PSAT (not optional), and 12th graders who choose will attend for a half-day in the morning to take the SAT (optional, however, registration is required; see below).
SAT at YC

Seniors wishing to take the SAT can do it at York Catholic on Wednesday, October 14.  Two test options are available.  Please click here for more information and the form to complete and return by Monday, September 14.  Questions can be directed to Kathy Hand, Director of Studies, at [email protected] or 717-846-8871 x313.
Schedule Changes
Class Schedule
Any request for a course change must be accompanied by a written parental request, teacher approval (as originally needed), and a $25.00 Late Roster Change Fee.  Since the Main Roster is built according to the original registration of students, we cannot guarantee admission to particular classes.  For incoming new students, if an error has been made in placement, teachers will initiate the needed change and no fee will be assessed.  Students requesting schedule changes must do so during the Drop Add period, which ends September 18, and no changes will be made after that date.  Level changes, however, will be considered into the first quarter at the discretion of the subject teacher for any student who has been inaccurately placed in a course.

Virtual & In-Class Learning
Our Drop Add grace period applies to the virtual and in-person option as well.  If a student opted virtual and wishes to return to in-school instruction, he or she must do so before September 18.  The same applies if a student is reporting to school but wishes to change to the virtual option.   Parents must email Kathy Hand at [email protected] to request a change.
Homecoming
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we won't be able to enjoy some of our usual Homecoming activities in person this year.  Our dance, parade, school tours, alumni social, and alumni band and cheerleader nights are postponed until we can safely gather in the future.  Student Council is planning alternate activities for students to enjoy.  The YAIAA league is continuing with its sports season, so our Homecoming football game is scheduled to take place Friday, October 2, at 7 PM versus Bermudian Springs.  While we cannot have fans at the football game, you can catch all of the action on our YouTube livestream.  Go IRISH!

SportsLeader
With the opening of our new school year and the fall sports season, we are pleased to announce the continuation of our sports ministry partnership with SportsLeader.  SportsLeader provides a Catholic virtue-based formation program for coaches to reinforce among student-athletes. Harrisburg is the first diocese to incorporate the program as a whole across all of its high schools. "The Diocese uses sport as a context for physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth," said Director of Sports Ministry, Jim Gontis. "Our partnership with SportsLeader represents a continuation of the great Catholic athletics tradition we have in the diocese in a very intentional way."  For more information about SportsLeader, our Sports Ministry partner, visit www.sportsleader.org or follow on social media at Facebook: SportsLeader, or Twitter: @sportsleaderusa.
