Dear Morning Star Families and Friends,
Later this week we will welcome Mrs. Despres back to her 11th grade class. We are all looking forward to having her back. This is the last week of our Scholastic On-line Book Fair. Our dress like your favor book character day was a huge success! The students and teachers really out did themselves. On October 6th we will have our annual Literacy Night live streamed from 6:30 -7:30pm. Please email Jontai Binder if you are planning on attending. Reading to your child or having your child read at home for 10 to 20 minutes every night helps with language development and promotes brain development. Reading together at home strengthens family relationships and no child is ever too old to read with or to their parents.
Governor DeSantis announced Friday that Florida would be entering Phase 3 reopening. Phase 3 reopening does not include schools. Masks are still mandated, and we are staying consistent with the same protocols which have been in place since the beginning of the year.
A reminder: The first Friday of every month are non-uniform days. October 2nd will be a non-uniform day. Also, please keep an eye out for information coming out soon about our Fall Fun Day.
Stay healthy and safe!
Peace,

If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It!
At the beginning of last school year, Nicole Haragutchi, 2019 Young Miss Florida American Teen and Abby Dickie, 2019 Miss National American Teen, came to Morning Star to deliver school supplies they collected for our teachers and classes. During their visit Nicole and Abby also spoke with Mrs. Huband’s class. One of the things Nicole discussed with the class was her favorite quote, “If you can dream it, you can do it!” When the class wrote thank you cards to the girls, one of the students, Christopher, wrote that his dream was to be a Texas Storm Chaser when he grew up. Because they felt it was a lesson that could benefit the whole class, both girls worked on raising money to pay for a class from the Texas Storm Chasers! For that purpose, Nicole created the "If You Can Dream" Foundation and Morning Star School is one of the recipients of her foundation. The class did not take place last school year due to Covid-19 but last week Christopher’s class had a Zoom visit from the Texas Storm Chasers! The class learned about tornadoes, lightning, flooding, and hail. Christopher was very excited and asked the storm chasers numerous questions, which they happily answered.

Development Department Sends Letters of Good News to Building Campaign Donors!
What great news to announce the completion of our 5 year, $1.6M "Building a Brighter Future" capital campaign to build our high school! It's hard to believe we are completely done - one year ahead of schedule. Kerry Brophy and Sister Elise spent hours stuffing letters that announced the news to each and every campaign donor. Thank you to all the families that supported us through this process! This year we have 15 students in our Senior class.

Primary class read the book “How do Dinosaurs go to School". It taught them lessons about how to follow rules at school and how to be kind.
|
|
Intermediate students engaged in a scientific inquiry and asked the question, “Do worms grow?” They used gummy worms and placed them in three different liquids/solutions - water, salt water, and sprite. They discovered that the worms in water "grew" the most. Knaeem had a great time conducting this experiment.

Guinea pigs Boo and Buttercup make a great addition to Mrs. Franqui's intermediate class. When students did morning work, Boo and Buttercup sat on their desk and helped them focus on the task at hand. Sometimes students will just request that they sit with them to keep them company. Click on the arrow below to see a video of Audra interacting with Buttercup.

Keeping up the Morning Star High School and Bishop Snyder High School (BSHS) tradition of getting together, our juniors and seniors met with the BSHS Campus Ministry team virtually last week. After getting to know each other, they came up with ideas to continue our great partnership during this time of social distancing. Next week our freshman will have their retreat virtually and after, BSHS Campus Ministry will meet with our Sophomores. There are also lots of plans for a fun Homecoming Week in the near future!
