$30K for 30 Mile Matching Challenge a Success!

We did it - we surpassed our goal!

Thank you to the generous supporters of the $30K for 30 Mile matching challenge. 136 donors stepped up in the final days of the year to help us raise $36,000 and exceed our goal! Your generosity ensures that our work for clean and healthy waters will not only continue, but expand to meet the growing challenges our watershed faces.

Once again, we’d like to give a shout out to the seven donors from Androscoggin Lake, Echo Lake, Flying Pond, Lovejoy Pond, Minnehonk Lake, Parker Pond, and Pocasset Lake who, collectively, made this opportunity possible by matching these gifts with an additional $30K.

Thank you to ALL of the generous lake lovers who supported 30 Mile this year! Your gifts of all sizes demonstrate your commitment to the lakes, ponds, and streams in our watershed. We are grateful for you and the many ways you show up as a community to help care for these precious resources.

2022 Androscoggin Lake

Watershed Survey Report now available!

In May 2022, 30 Mile, with the support of our partners and local volunteers, conducted a survey of the Androscoggin Lake watershed. The purpose of the survey was to protect and improve water quality in the lake by identifying sources of soil erosion and polluted runoff that are now, or could in the future, pose a risk to water quality, and recommending solutions to correct the problems.

Trained volunteers and technical leaders surveyed the developed areas of the Androscoggin Lake watershed, identifying 142 erosion sites that are impacting or have the potential to harm water quality. Our final report provides an overview of survey results and prioritizes next steps. It is designed specifically for landowners living in the Androscoggin Lake watershed, and includes the towns of Wayne, Leeds, and Monmouth. Follow-up letters to all landowners with identified erosion sites will be sent in early January.

To read the full report, the two-page summary, or learn more information about how you can address erosion on your property, visit our Watershed Survey webpage.

Your help is needed to keep strong septic rules in the shoreland zone!

The following is an important message from our partner, Maine Lakes:

As the legislative session gets started this month, we know there are several bills up for consideration that will protect lakes and lake habitat, including bills to reduce near-shore wakes, allocate dollars to the Lake Protection Fund, and reduce risks of invasive species spread. We will need help from lake advocates like you to get these bills through the legislature.

Right now, we need your voice to be heard on a critical change to subsurface wastewater disposal rules proposed by the Department of Health and Human Services.

The rule change would allow first-time septic systems to be placed on otherwise unsuitable soils if the landowner brings in fill and waits for 20 years, or the lot was filled more than 20 years ago. This change would be bad for lakes. It would allow many lots within the shoreland zone with poor soils that are currently undevelopable to be open for development.

Submit comments on the DHHS website HERE or email your comments to Andrew Hardy andrew.hardy@maine.gov before January 13th to speak up against this rule change.
