Draft One is Done!

I am so excited to report that on Monday, May 31, I typed the final words for the first draft of Feathers in the Sand (working title), my second women's fiction novel.

The next step, according to my teacher Jessica Brody, is to set the manuscript aside for at least two weeks. This is harder than I thought, but I'm going to manage :)

In the meantime, I am going to study up on the revising process. I know that there's still a lot of work to do on my new "baby," and I'm looking forward to sharing more about it with you in coming issues.

If you'd like to read about some of the main characters, check out the back issues of this newsletter here. You'll meet Eva, and Jasper, and a few others!

June Fiction Give-Away

This month I'm giving away two more paperback copies of Sandra Hutchison's The Awful Mess.

A divorcee, a priest, and a cop walk into a big mess in a very small town.

This was one of five general fiction semifinalists for the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award!

Dumped by a husband who wants children she can't have, editor Mary Bellamy starts over in tiny, affordable Lawson, New Hampshire. All she wants is peace and quiet and maybe a cat. But the unhappily-married Episcopal priest who wants to save her heathen soul appears susceptible to other temptations. The handsome local cop who's an excellent kisser confuses her by being in favor of gay rights, but opposed to sex before marriage.

Before she knows it, Mary's keeping a scandalous secret at great cost. Worse, her disintegrating ex-husband threatens what little she has left.

Persevering through her awful mess with warmth, wit, snark, and the occasional horrifying moral lapse, Mary may encounter not only terrifying risks, but unexpected blessings.

“It puts me in mind of Jane Austen, the moral mathematics here… It renews me as a reader, to enjoy a book so much; and as a writer, see it done so well.”
~ Tim Farrington, author of The Monk Downstairs

If you want one, just fill out the short form here and I'll do a random drawing THIS SUNDAY June 13. You'll receive an email notice that you've won, and I'll just ask for your snail mail address after that.

Stories That Stir the Soul

Ellie and the Harp Maker, by Hazel Prior. This novel is soulful and charming! I love stories that are about love between two beings who obviously belong together, but without the traditional, predictable format.

I fell in love with this story of Ellie, the Exmoor housewife who answers her soul's calling to be making music, and Dan, the lonely but wise harp maker. The supporting characters are also admirable and real (except for Ellie's smarmy husband Clive), including Phineas the Pheasant. There is also a lot here about friendship, following one's inner guidance, and the power of music.
Highly recommend!
