Dear Normandale Families,

While students were not in school on Monday, September 27 teachers were! Normandale staff gathered to review immersion best practices with Amy Young, the Minnesota Department of Education Multi-lingual Learning Specialist. Amy’s presentation focused on: 1) helping students build a bi-lingual identity, 2) expanding language for students and 3) connecting languages- English and French. Teachers had time to digest this information and will work to integrate aspects of it into their classrooms. I look forward to continuing this work with staff throughout the rest of the school year. As you and your student(s) travel down this immersion pathway here is a quick video about the benefits of your journey!

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

Hello Normandale Families,

It’s been wonderful seeing kids back at school learning and enjoying being together again! Thank you to those who donated clothes and other supplies, they have been very useful and helpful! We’re still looking for some boy’s pants, size 5-8. Drop them off or send them with your child whenever :)

This week, the health office has a few updates and resources for you and your family:

COVID 19 Prevention and Mitigation: Masking

Please continue to educate your child on the importance of properly wearing a well fitting mask, when they can/should take it off, and why it's important to wear a mask at school (at minimum to avoid quarantine and at maximum to avoid contracting or spreading illness).

You may remember we had a mask fitting table at open house in August, if you need that information again, you can find it here: Mask Recommendations and Tips

Here’s my number one tip for choosing a mask for your child:

The best mask is the mask your child will wear!!

COVID 19 Testing:

The Minnesota Department of Health recommends Minnesotans test at least every other week for COVID-19, even if you do not have symptoms. This video from MDH details the process for taking a test at home.

You can order your test here: No Cost COVID-19 testing for All Minnesotans

If you need a test immediately for symptomatic person(s) in your household, you can find testing locations here: Find a Testing Location

COVID-19 Vaccines:

5-11 year olds: Pfizer seeks FDA approval for COVID-19 Vaccine

In good health,

MASKS ARE REQUIRED AT NORMANDALE

The Health and Safety Measures resolution that was approved by the Edina School Board on August 17 includes universal masking for all students and adults in Edina transportation and indoor school settings. Please remember your mask when you visit Normandale for Partnership Planning conferences and volunteering.

The Minnesota Department of Health is requesting that schools continue to track COVID related cases among their student population.

Covid/Illness Reporting Form - Please use this form to report your child’s absence due to illness. It is helpful to us in tracking illness related absences and which families we need to follow up with to guide through the decision tree.

As always, call if you need consultation on whether or not your child should stay home, get tested, and where to get tested. We’re here to help!

CIRCLE DROP-OFF & PICK-UP

Here are a few important reminders about morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up from the circle at door 10 (the Normandale main door.)

  • The Normandale Circle is for quick drop-offs and pick-ups only. If your student(s) need assistance getting in or out of your vehicle, please park in the lot and walk them up to the sidewalk.
  • Please do not exit your vehicle during drop-off and pick-up.
  • Please pull as far forward in the circle as you can before dropping off or picking up your student(s).
  • To enter the circle, use the OUTSIDE lanes of the parking lot. You may not enter the circle from the middle lane of the parking lot.
  • Please exit the circle as quickly and safely as possible. If you need to check your phone or take care of other tasks, move to the parking lot so you are not blocking the flow of traffic behind you.

Thank you for helping to keep traffic moving!

LUNCHTIME VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We continue to need volunteers to supervise outdoor home lunch. Please sign up HERE if you are able to help. As a reminder, volunteers are what allows us to offer outdoor lunch for students.

BACK TO BORDEAUX 2022

Dear 5th grade families,

We are excited to announce an informational meeting about our POSSIBLE amazing opportunity for adventure and learning, the Back-to-Back exchange trip to Bordeaux, France in June 2022. The meeting will be held September 29th at 4:30 PM in the Media Center

We will have a general overview (preview slides here), the logistics of the trip and what to expect as well as time for questions.

Sign-up deadline is set for now as November 1, so there is still time to decide if this trip is right for your student and family.

Can’t make the meeting? Take a look at our website. Then, fill out the form that says you might be interested (this is not an application or any kind of commitment).

Most warmly,

MEET THE INTERN

Alizée Champiot- FIRST GRADE

About me...: Hi my name is Alizée and I come from the South of France ! I grew up in Grasse, a city known for fabricating perfumes. My father was born in Marseille, a city from the South as well, and my mom was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I have a big brother as well (who turned 28 this year). My biggest passion is drawing (illustrations and comics) but I also love reading and cooking !

In The US...: I'm waiting to settle down and get used to my surroundings here in Edina before I plan what else I will do in the US, but I'm thinking about maybe visiting some of my cousins on my mothers side in Boston. I'm interested in visiting Louisiana as well. But I'm not sure yet about any of this, since I prefer to wait a little before really planning anything.

AlizeeC.jpg

My favorite food…: There are a lot of dishes I love, but the first one that came to my mind is red rice with beans. It's a meal made by boiling red beans and then using the water (which became red thanks to the beans) to cook rice. The result is red rice, mixed with beans. I also just really love any sweet\dessert with chocolate in it!

I am excited about…: What I am most excited about is meeting everyone : my host family, the teachers and the students! I can't wait to know about a new culture and a new climate. I love change so it's exciting to discover Minnesota, which I have never been to before. I am curious about what cultural similarities and differences I will get the chance to experience!
