September 2020 Heart Connections

Join us in celebrating the 58 heart connections made in September, a 65% increase over August! Our adoption team is working more efficiently than ever to place pets in their new forever homes! Now, within 24 hours, your questionnaire is processed, pending vet records and landlord approval. We are going above and beyond to place more animals, even making one heart connection this month with a family all the way from North Carolina. We are committed to providing the best customer service throughout our adoption process and look forward to helping you find your match.

Visit GMHS on the web to view all the homeless pets searching for a forever family and submit your adoption questionnaire electronically. We continue to conduct adoptions by appointment in response to COVID-19. With an approved questionnaire, a member of our Adoption Team will schedule a time for you to make your very own heart connection!
Adoption Success

One of the month's greatest successes is the adoption of Tide, who waited 213 days to find his match. He is thriving with his new human companion who shares, "He has made himself right at home. I am very happy to have him." As you can see, he is living the dream! We wish them every happiness and many years filled with love and great memories.
Heartworm Positive Dogs Need Your Help!
Did you know GMHS is currently caring for 13 heartworm-positive dogs?

Heartworm disease is preventable, serious, and potentially fatal if untreated. All dogs in our care who test positive receive life-saving heartworm disease treatment at a cost of up to $1,000 per dog in addition to shelter, daily care, and routine veterinary care, including vaccines, medications, flea/tick treatments, and spay/neuter surgery. Homeless heartworm-positive dogs like Daphne, Cook, and Sandal (left to right) are counting on us, and saving lives is expensive.

Please consider making a donation to GMHS to provide them with the heartworm disease treatment that will save their lives. Along with necessary medical care, your contribution offers these dogs the gift of good health and forever homes. Thank you for making GMHS a beacon of hope and safe harbor for homeless pets!
GMHS is neither affiliated with any national animal welfare organizations nor do we receive funding from the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States.
September 2020 Shelter Snapshot

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners. We are also committed to education, outreach, and transparency. Our annual statistics are available on our website, and we also offer you a monthly snapshot.

September was an incredible month for adoptions, with 40 cats (including 11 Backyard Buddies) and 18 dogs finding their forever homes! Also 57 animals were transferred to adoption-guaranteed partners through our Highway to Home Program. Thank you to everyone for making September such a great month for the people and pets of the communities we serve!
Zeke is one of the homeless pets at GMHS waiting to make a heart connection. He will thrive as a solo pet with an active, mature family. Could his ideal match be with you?!
Clinic Perfoms Record-Breaking Number of Surgeries
Despite the effects COVID-19, Fixin’ to Save Spay & Neuter Clinic altered a record-high number of pets in the past three months! The need for spay and neuter is greater than ever. Clinic Director Cassandra Six shares, "At Fixin to Save Spay & Neuter Clinic we are dedicated to meeting the needs of our community through low cost spay and neuter services. Spaying and neutering has a significant impact on our community. Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce an incredible 370,000 kittens! By offering affordable spay and neuter services, our goal is to alter as many animals as possible to help control the pet population."

In an effort to further increase access to services, the Clinic has debuted Wellness Package Deals. Available only at time of surgery, package deals provide pets with rabies vaccine, DHPP or FVRCP vaccine, microchipping, heartworm test or Feline Leukemia/ FIV Test, nail trim, and ear cleaning. The package price represents a 10% discount on the cost of individual services listed! (All services must be rendered to receive discount.)

Call (804) 694-0349 today to schedule your pet's appointment and ask for the Canine or Feline Package when booking your appointment. Stay in touch with the clinic team by visiting them on the web and Facebook.
Backyard Buddies Need Homes

We have several amazing Backyard Buddies, also known as barn cats, at GMHS who have received all of their vaccinations and been spayed/neutered and microchipped. All they need now is a home!

Adoption fees for Backyard Buddies are sponsored, and they make super outdoor cats. If you would like to adopt and are prepared to provide them with food and shelter, submit your adoption questionnaire today!

Check out cats available for adoption and look for Backyard Buddy in the description. If you would like more information about our Backyard Buddies and how this program saves lives, email us today.
Podge Hodge Finds New Family through Highway to Home

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the GMHS Highway to Home program has been working diligently with our network of trusted adoption-guaranteed partners to help place homeless pets in areas where adoption demands are high and rescues have space. When a pet from GMHS goes to one of our incredible partners, they average less than one week in the new shelter before being adopted.

Recently cat Podge Hodge was transferred to one of our adoption-guaranteed rescue partners through our Highway To Home program. This spunky, selectively sweet girl spent over a year at GMHS after her owner passed away. She was waiting for the right person to be worthy of her company. We are happy to share she has found her human companion. We are so happy for Podge Hodge and her new family!
You Can Volunteer at Home, Too!

Do you have some extra time on your hands and want to help enrich the lives of homeless pets? We have DIY, easy-to-follow instructions to make toys for our pets!

This is a great activity for little ones who want to help the homeless pets awaiting adoption. Once you finish the toys, give our Volunteer Manager Waynette Petty a call at 804-693-5520 ext. 320 or email volunteer@gmhumanesociety.org to schedule a time to drop off the toys.
Compassionate Community
The GMHS team is incredibly grateful to That Damn Mary Brewing Company for their recent donation and support of our life-saving mission. In August, they hosted Community Brew Month, donating a portion of proceeds from beer sold to various local charities. Our thanks to the TDM team for choosing to share their heart for homeless pets with us and making an investment in our community!
When our friends at Chesapeake Bank could not gather together for employee summer festivities due to COVID-19, they chose to give back to homeless pets in need. They stopped by with pet food and supplies and a generous donation. We are so thankful for their life-saving partnership and proud to collaborate with them to save more lives.
Huge thanks to our friend Alex Mayes! Alex came by the shelter with a truck bed full of food and supplies for our many pets. Thanks to you, Alex, for sharing your heart for homeless pets and supporting the mission of GMHS!
Three cheers for the team at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Gloucester Point and their campers for their recent donation of linens, pet food, and supplies. On September 26, campers donated items to play BINGO at the Campground's Cindy Bear Pavilion. Erin Gedicke (right) presented the donation to GMHS CEO April Martinez. We are grateful to BINGO players and the Jellystone team for hosting a creative fundraiser and extending such kindness to GMHS and the homeless pets in our care.
Our friends at Backyard Birder Seed & Supply and Kaz Vision and Laser Center are actively raising funds for GMHS' Angel Fund through the sale of masks handcrafted by Volunteer Groomer Shelley. She is pictured with Little Man, a homeless beagle who will be available for adoption as soon as he is medically cleared.

Made with love, the masks continue to be available for purchase at Backyard Birder Seed & Supply and Kaz Vision and Laser Center. One hundred percent of the purchase price benefits the Angel Fund, which covers the cost of extraordinary veterinary care for shelter pets. Shelly recently presented GMHS with a $2,000 donation from mask proceeds. Let's hear it for store owners Dean and Valerie ShostakDr. Kian Kaz, and Shelley for their creative and timely fundraiser. Thank you for your life-saving partnership!
