We continue to conduct adoptions by appointment in response to COVID-19. With an approved questionnaire, a member of our Adoption Team will schedule a time for you to make your very own heart connection!

One of the month's greatest successes is the adoption of Tide, who waited 213 days to find his match. He is thriving with his new human companion who shares, "He has made himself right at home. I am very happy to have him." As you can see, he is living the dream! We wish them every happiness and many years filled with love and great memories.

Heartworm disease is preventable, serious, and potentially fatal if untreated. All dogs in our care who test positive receive life-saving heartworm disease treatment at a cost of up to $1,000 per dog in addition to shelter, daily care, and routine veterinary care, including vaccines, medications, flea/tick treatments, and spay/neuter surgery. Homeless heartworm-positive dogs like Daphne, Cook, and Sandal (left to right) are counting on us, and saving lives is expensive.

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners. Despite the effects COVID-19, Fixin’ to Save Spay & Neuter Clinic altered a record-high number of pets in the past three months! The need for spay and neuter is greater than ever. Clinic Director Cassandra Six shares, "At Fixin to Save Spay & Neuter Clinic we are dedicated to meeting the needs of our community through low cost spay and neuter services. Spaying and neutering has a significant impact on our community. Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce an incredible 370,000 kittens! By offering affordable spay and neuter services, our goal is to alter as many animals as possible to help control the pet population."

Recently cat Podge Hodge was transferred to one of our adoption-guaranteed rescue partners through our Highway To Home program. This spunky, selectively sweet girl spent over a year at GMHS after her owner passed away. She was waiting for the right person to be worthy of her company. We are happy to share she has found her human companion. We are so happy for Podge Hodge and her new family!

The GMHS team is incredibly grateful to That Damn Mary Brewing Company for their recent donation and support of our life-saving mission. In August, they hosted Community Brew Month, donating a portion of proceeds from beer sold to various local charities. Our thanks to the TDM team for choosing to share their heart for homeless pets with us and making an investment in our community!

When our friends at Chesapeake Bank could not gather together for employee summer festivities due to COVID-19, they chose to give back to homeless pets in need. They stopped by with pet food and supplies and a generous donation. We are so thankful for their life-saving partnership and proud to collaborate with them to save more lives.

Three cheers for the team at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Gloucester Point and their campers for their recent donation of linens, pet food, and supplies. On September 26, campers donated items to play BINGO at the Campground's Cindy Bear Pavilion. Erin Gedicke (right) presented the donation to GMHS CEO April Martinez. We are grateful to BINGO players and the Jellystone team for hosting a creative fundraiser and extending such kindness to GMHS and the homeless pets in our care.

Our friends at Backyard Birder Seed & Supply and Kaz Vision and Laser Center are actively raising funds for GMHS' Angel Fund through the sale of masks handcrafted by Volunteer Groomer Shelley. She is pictured with Little Man, a homeless beagle who will be available for adoption as soon as he is medically cleared.

Made with love, the masks continue to be available for purchase at Backyard Birder Seed & Supply and Kaz Vision and Laser Center. One hundred percent of the purchase price benefits the Angel Fund, which covers the cost of extraordinary veterinary care for shelter pets.
