The Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations (CEHCUP) is pleased to announce that its Experimental Research Media Laboratory (ERML) is now fully functional and has been approved to conduct in-person experimental research. Both are in the Dole Human Development Center, Room 2001. ERML is currently conducting two studies on emotion and media and invites interested faculty and graduate students to propose studies that can benefit from the unique array of measurements available in the lab, such as psychophysiology (facial EMG, ECG, GSR), eye tracking, facial emotion recognition, reaction time, and dial studies, as well as integration with Qualtrics for survey-based research (for both treatment and instrument delivery). Planned development will add virtual reality and mobile devices to the media delivery means available in the lab. ERML will help with the design of the studies (from conception to data collection and analysis), and CEHCUP can also assist with the production of tailored treatments for either research studies or interventions. Pat Gaston, the Lacy C. Haynes Professor of Journalism, will participate in Coffee @ The Commons at 10 a.m. on Oct. 1. Gaston will lead a dialogue with Irin Carmon, a senior correspondent at New York Magazine. In 2017-18, Carmon worked with The Washington Post and reporter Amy Brittain to break the story of sexual assault and harassment allegations against journalist Charlie Rose. The event is on Zoom. Research published in the Newspaper Research Journal by Professor Scott Reinardy and doctoral student Annalise Baines explores how journalists have dealt with the emotional and physical toll of unemployment and how they adjusted to new jobs and careers. Read the KU News story.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to a town hall discussion of the new Media Arts & Production (MA&P) concentration currently in development for the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Discussion will include vision and goals for the new MA&P concentration, curriculum updates and Q&A. Join us from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 30 in Clarkson Gallery.
The Kansas Scholastic Press Association will host area high school journalism advisors in Stauffer-Flint Hall on Sept. 29 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The KSPA Fall Conference, which annually hosts hundreds of area high school journalism students, was re-imagined with the recent surge of COVID-19. The new, smaller footprint concept is a Professional Development Event for area high school teachers. After a 9 a.m. keynote address by Hannah Wise, j’14, teachers will attend breakout sessions throughout the building.

University Daily Kansan and Dole Institute sponsor Bob Dole event |
This year marks 25 years since Bob Dole left the United States Senate. In honor of this important milestone, The University Daily Kansan is publishing a multi-page feature on Dole and his life in public service. Student journalists who led the project will be featured in a Journalism and Politics lecture at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Dole Institute of Politics. Students Stef Manchen, Kansan editor, Carly Johnson, managing editor, and Blake Ullman, news editor, will engage in a panel discussion about the project. Copies of the special Kansan edition will be available at the event. Join in person or watch the livestream of the event on the Dole Institute YouTube channel.

HOPE@CAPS Mental Health Peer Educators are a team of currently enrolled KU students who are certified and trained in providing support, education and resources to their peers who may be experiencing distress that might not rise to the level of need for mental health intervention at Counseling and Psychological Services. The University Daily Kansan is partnering with The Wall Street Journal, the School of Business and Pickleman’s Gourmet Cafe for Wall Street Wednesdays, a series of events designed to enhance student engagement with The Wall Street Journal. Each event begins at 12:20 p.m. with a quiz on the main ideas encapsulated in articles and stories reported in The Wall Street Journal during the previous week. This is followed by Professor Perspective, a short discussion led by a faculty expert on a recent story from the newspaper. The event concludes by 12:50 p.m. with prizes for the top three scorers on the quiz and a light snack. The second event is this Wednesday, Sept. 29. Learn more and register here.

Deadline extended for the Pulliam Journalism Fellowship |
A representative from the Pulliam Journalism Fellowship plans to conduct virtual interviews via Zoom on Wednesday, Oct. 27, for the summer 2022 program (June 6-Aug. 12). University of Kansas students of junior, senior or graduate standing as of Nov. 1, 2021, are eligible to apply and participate in the interviews. The fellowship pays each fellow $650 a week for 10 weeks at the Indianapolis Star or Arizona Republic. Eight interviews will be conducted between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Oct. 27. Interested students should submit their resume and work samples (nor more than two articles) by Oct. 15 to Steve Rottinghaus, career and outreach coordinator, or drop them off in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 120.
