Each Precious Life Deserves the Dignity of Remembrance
✡︎ Shabbat Shalom ✡︎

This week in Jewish history overwhelms the senses. So much destruction of Jewish lives and Yiddishkeit. On Tisha B'Av, we take a day to remember the loss of life because each precious life deserves the dignity of remembrance.
We take a day to remember the loss of unique Jewish culture because Judaism transforms the world into holiness. May HaShem preserve and provide for us as we acknowledge and mourn our past, and look toward to an abundant and beautiful future.

The list of attacks against the innocents starts on the 2nd of Av 1942, when French police rounded up 30,000 Jews (including 4500 children) for deportation. Only 30 adults are known to have survived the round up. On the 3rd of Av 1648, 10,000 Jews of Polannoe, Poland perished in the Chmielnicki massacres. On the 7th of Av 1941. Goering officially ordered the planning and launching of the Nazi policy of mass executions of the Jews. On the 8th of Av 1349, Jews of Frankfort, Germany were killed in the Black Death massacres, in 1670 the Jewish community of Vienna was expelled, and in1942 mass deportation of Jews from the Warsaw ghetto was announced, Over 300,000 Jews were taken to concentration camps in the 53 days of this Nazi action.

Finally we get to Tisha B'Av - the 9th Day of Av, which falls on Sunday July 18, 2021. On this day in Jewish history, HaShem tacked on 40 years of exile before the Jews could enter the Promised Land, a consequence of trusting the spies' negative report rather than trusting in
G-d's provision and help. On this date in other years, we remember the destruction of the First and Second Temples; the battle of Betar, in which approximately 500,000 Jews were massacred; the Jewish expulsions from England, France and Spain; another 3,000 Jews killed in Konstantynow, in the Chmielnicki massacres,
the commencement of WWI, which led to the Holocaust, and in 1994, the AMIA bombing of the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires.

ONE JEW’S LOOK THROUGH JUDAISM AT ABORTION

In a place where there are no men, strive, thou, to be a man. Hillel

God gave the human a brain that is more developed than that of any other animal. Through good education and moral training, the core of his emotions, which we call his heart or soul, should develop to very high levels. Some of these feelings are compassion, courage, kindness, gentleness, generosity, and love. Rampant killers are considered to have no heart. The higher the standard that is valued by one’s heart, the more one is developed as a human being, and the more distant he is from the status of animal. A person who uses not only his brain but also his heart, and exercises that heart to the highest levels of love-related characteristics is attempting to be fully human. We must choose to act like full men and full women in a world that has allowed itself to sink to base, shameful depths.
The pro-abortion mentality teaches one to run away from problems and to avoid facing responsibility. Legal abortion encourages an easy, childish way out of difficulties in general, which is not the Jewish way. Once a Jewish girl reaches the bat mitzvah age of twelve, whether or not she has celebrated this milestone in a formal, religious ceremony, she is considered by our people to be an adult in her obligations toward God. Regardless of the age of a pregnant girl or woman, if she feels that she cannot adequately carry out motherhood’s responsibilities, she is morally obligated to secure the best possible future care for her child. Ending a life is not a mature option for solving poverty, or marital or family problems.
