Tackle Hunger in Our Community
The Fourth Church Youth are counting on your assistance in scoring a big victory in this Sunday's Souper Bowl!

During Coffee Hour on Sunday, the youth will be collecting cans of soup and other nonperishable food items as well as monetary contributions for the Souper Bowl of Caring--a national grassroots, faith-based campaign against hunger.

All proceeds collected by our youth will support the food pantry of the Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center.

So come to church Sunday ready to fill the youth's large soup pots with canned goods and contributions that will help us tackle hunger in our community!

Time:
   Sunday, February 5
   During Coffee Hour

Place:
Coffee Hour in Anderson Hall and the Commons

An Invitation to Sign a Card of Support
As you may recall, last spring Fourth Church became sponsors of a refugee Muslim family from Syria. This family of four now lives in Skokie in an apartment furnished by church members, who have also been serving as mentors and community guides under the support of RefugeeOne.

Many of you have inquired how this family, the Jalmous, are doing. Fortunately they are doing well. You can find information about them at the Mission table during Coffee Hour this Sunday, where you can also sign a card of support that we will be sending to them.

Listening for the Word for Today
Out of a time of conflict and division in the community of faith, when some are insiders and some are outsiders, when political and religious leaders are co-opted, mistrusted, and discredited, when the great majority of people are without power, and when cultures clash--out of that time comes the Gospel of Matthew.

It is a New Testament book that continues to surprise and seize us with its relevance, eloquence, and power. So we invite you to join Anna Case-Winters in a four-week examination of the book of Matthew and the compelling portrait of Jesus it presents.

Anna is an ordained Presbyterian minister and Professor of Theology at McCormick Theological Seminary. Together with her we will explore the teachings of Jesus, especially in the Sermon on the Mount, and consider the ethical implications of the Lord's Prayer.

Time:
    Sundays, February 5-26
    9:30 a.m.

Place:

threeRoots of American Racism, Part II
The Task of Changing Hearts and Minds
One of the most popular Academy for Faith and Life classes of last fall was "Roots of American Racism, Part I" taught by Claudia Boatright, a Fourth Church member and retired history teacher.

This month Claudia is back to help us pick up where we left off. We'll begin with a study of the post-Civil War era and the birth of Jim Crow and trace the efforts of leaders, both black and white, as they worked during the first half of the twentieth century to end segregation, ending at the doorstep of the great civil rights movement after World War II.

If you weren't able to be with us for our discussions last fall, please do join us in February--Black History Month--as we continue the important task of working to understand and confront the history of American racism: an undertaking fundamental to our faith and to our conviction that true Christian discipleship witnesses to the belief that we are all children of God and are all equal in the sight of the God.

Time:
    Sundays, February 5-26
    11:00 a.m.

Place:

Change a Child's Life . . . and Yours!
Each Monday through Thursday evening of the school year, you will find the Gratz Center alive with the energy of students in the Chicago Lights Tutoring program.

What makes it possible to promote long-term academic and social success for these youth from under-resourced neighborhoods is the commitment of volunteer tutors, who work one-to-one with a child one evening a week from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Do you have some time to join in making this lasting difference in the life of a child? We could use your help as a Tutoring volunteer!

Come learn more at a one-session information and orientation session this Tuesday, February 7 at 6:00 p.m. in Borwell Dining Room.

For details or to RSVP, contact Fernie Tiflis.
