An exercise from "The Life We Are Given"
by George Leonard and Michael Murphy
In the hurry and worry of daily life, it’s easy to neglect what we most desire. A community of practice can help us stay on the path. Still, we forget. The electronic clamor that surrounds us, the unrelenting seductiveness of “entertainment,” the hypnotic pull of sheer busyness all conspire against the awareness that furthers transformation.
To remind yourself of your affirmations (and of your overall practice), select two or three checkpoints in your house or workplace.
Pick places you are sure to pass on a typical day - the door to your bathroom or kitchen, a staircase, the front or back entrance. To help catch your attention, you might mark your checkpoints.
Get creative in how you can joyfully bring awareness to your transformative vision. You can use bright stickers or colorful notes to make your affirmation marker.
Eventually, you might become so accustomed to these markings that you no longer notice them. In this case, change the colors or location to keep your reminders fresh.
Every time you pass one of these reminders, say an affirmation silently or aloud. Bring an image of the affirmation to mind. Act as if in some way it is already realized.
Perhaps the words, the image, the as if state of being will stay with you for more than a short while as you carry on with your daily life. It might not be easy but it is possible to integrate your practice in some significant manner with your responsibilities to job and family. Affirmation checkpoints can jumpstart the process that produces such a fusion.
