Hartwood Acres Park Meadow
The Valley News Dispatch visited the Hartwood Acres Park Meadow recently and it's bursting in blooms. This site is easy to find - park at the Amphitheater and hit the trail behind the stage. It's off to the left - and impossible to miss! Great for graduation, engagement and family photos. Tag us with your favorites! But for the health of these new plantings, please stay on the grass paths designed for walkers and avoid going inside the meadow. There are ticks in the deep foliage!
While you're there, check out the plantings along Little Pine Creek on the opposite side of the trail. Those native trees and shrubs, along with the meadow, create an ecosystem that attracts pollinators, absorbs storm water and provides food and shelter for small birds and animals. The conversion of this former mowed turf was recommended by the Hartwood Acres Park Ecological Assessment.
These projects were funded by the Charity Randall Foundation, Patagonia, individual donors and Allegheny County.

2020 Campaign for Allegheny County Parks
If the hot days of August leave you looking for cool spots to relax and play, you're not alone. The Allegheny County Parks offer both! Wooded trails and bike lanes, refreshing lakes for fishing and boating and shaded benches throughout all nine parks provide welcome relief.
We all need the parks every month of the year and the parks need you! The 2020 Campaign for the Allegheny County Parks offers you the chance to celebrate the parks you love today. Your support over the years has helped us plant 24 acres of meadows, 2,000 trees and restore six miles of trails, improving the parks' ecology and benefiting the entire region. Your support is also helping us restore historical features like the Cascades in South Park and the Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres.
Please support your nine Allegheny County parks with a 100% tax-deductible donation.
If your organization would like to explore sponsorship, please email Barbara Brewton or call her at 724.327.7627.
We are always grateful for your support.

Tower Iron, Sculpture # 5, Joseph Goto
Recently, the conditions were just right - hot and dry - to ease a 14.5 ton sculpture onto its new resting spot in the Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres. Tower Iron, Sculpture #5 sat outside of the WQED headquarters in Oakland for many years until the Carnegie Museum of Art loaned it to Allegheny County last year. Once the site was selected and the new concrete pad poured by Allegheny County, the waiting began for the ground to firm up to make the move safer and easier on the grass. Now that it is in place near the Mansion, it's open for visitors!
The Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres is made possible by the RADical ImPAct Grant program, which was launched in celebration of the Allegheny Regional Asset District’s 25th anniversary with the intention of funding bold, forward-looking, creative projects that will have a radical impact on the region.
The Parks Foundation is actively seeking funding from public and private sources and individuals and hopes to complete the construction by fall, 2021. If you would like to learn more about this exciting project or make a donation, contact Caitlin Harpster at charpster@acparksfoundation.org or 724.327.7627.

Spotting an unwelcome visitor.
A new predator is posing a threat to our state and local parks. The spotted lanternfly is an invasive plant hopper native to China, India and Vietnam and was first spotted in Pennsylvania in Berks County. The PA Department of Agriculture has reported that it has been seen in Allegheny County. It's especially threatening to grapes, hops and hardwoods.
Penn State Extension has compiled lots of information on ways to recognize and eradicate this nuisance.
