Today's Scripture Reflection
Gary Wieder, Family Pastor
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
Psalm 8:3–4

Did you ever get a science kit for Christmas when you were young? I did. And one of the best parts was a real, working microscope. A ten-year-old boy can’t get enough of looking at squirmy, weird, living creatures in a drop of mud – even if it was scraped from under his own fingernails. Gross!

The microscope is designed to take tiny things and magnify them to look bigger. This is good in a science experiment; but when it comes to ourselves and our problems, not so much. As Christians, we are called to “not think of ourselves more highly than we ought” (Romans 12:3). Remember John the Baptist's famous line: “He must increase and I must decrease”?

What other scientific instrument magnifies, but in a different way? How about a telescope? We use a telescope to view planets, stars and even distant galaxies. In other words, to make big things clearer and closer.

What’s my point?

When we magnify ourselves and our problems, it’s like using a microscope, making small stuff big. But when we magnify God, it’s like using a telescope, making God clearer and closer to us in our lives.

Even when God seems far off, the Bible reminds us that he cares deeply for us. The incredible creator of the universe sees our value and does not consider us insignificant. As Psalm 8 says: he is always mindful of us and cares for us.

Since we have the choice today, let’s work on magnifying God and not ourselves. Let’s show the world the big God we serve and help them understand his love for all. It’s about the telescope and not the microscope. Magnify the Lord!

In Christ,
Gary

Psalm 8
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
