Or Shalom At Home

It's week 15 of our online photo feature, Or Shalom At Home. Each week the newsletter features a photo of one member/member household sheltering in place or venturing outside. Eventually we will create an album on the Or Shalom website documenting how our community rode out the pandemic.

Janet Jacobs and family celebrate her mom's 87th birthday. From top left: Cousin Sharon, Janet, brother Michael, Isaac & Nicole, Syl (the Birthday Girl) with Aunt Annette & brother Greg, Tevy, niece Lillian, niece Rachel

We invite you to submit a photo, along with any message or caption, to Lillian. Photos can be posed, candid, jokey, somber. Please identify everyone in the picture (use first names only if you like). By sending in a photo, you consent to have the photo, your names, and any message you have written displayed in the newsletter and on the public website.

Israel in Our Moment - a 3-Part Series

Explore some of the struggles, complexities, and possibilities of the State of Israel in 2020 with our own Vavi Toran and Ilan Bloch, the guide who co-led our Or Shalom trip last summer in Israel/Palestine. All sessions will be  hour-long interactive presentations followed by Q and A.

1. Sunday, August 9 at 10:00 am -- "Resistance" with Ilan Bloch
Who are the different groups protesting against Netanyahu, what are they protesting against, what do the protests look like on the ground, and what have been the responses from Israeli political leaders, the police, and Netanyahu supporters?

2. Sunday, August 23 at 10:00 am -- "I No Longer Believe in a Jewish State" with Ilan Bloch
Peter Beinart's recent op-ed in the New York Times (and his longer essay in Jewish Currents) triggered many responses. During this talk, we will examine Beinart's argument and explore other possible options for moving toward (or away from) a solution (e.g. the Trump plan, unilateral annexation; the Geneva Initiative, etc.).

3. Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 pm - "Israel: Is it Jewish and Democratic?" with Vavi Toran
Israel is defined as a Jewish and Democratic state, but there is a tension between these two facets of Israel's identity. Some see Democracy as a threat to what they define as "Judaism," while others view "Judaism" as imperiling Democracy. Is it possible to maintain a balance between the two, without compromising either? We will explore this question through several works of Israeli art representing different perspectives.

Please register here for any of the sessions, and Zoom details (the same for all 3 sessions) will be sent to you.

Ilan Bloch works as a tour guide, teacher, and session facilitator for individuals and groups from overseas. Last year, he guided members of Or Shalom on our trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories. He is married with twins and lives in Jerusalem.

Vavi Toran has been an educator for many years training teachers and creating educational resources for Israel Education based on arts and culture. She is a longtime member of Or Shalom.

Psalm 137 and the Politics of the Black Spiritual
with the Jewish Community Library
Tuesday, August 11, 7:00-8:00 pm

What does it mean for oppressed people to play music before their oppressors? How can the artist avoid being co-opted? When is the performance liberatory, and when does it just entrench oppression?
This is the problem of Psalm 137.

Join English professor and Atlantic and Haaretz writer Raphael Magarik to explore one of the most difficult poems of the Hebrew Bible, one which has had a remarkable afterlife in Black culture.  Register here.
