Gifts of Gab
A call-based companion coordination program to combat social isolation and loneliness among older adults.

Are you starting to feel the effects of social isolation and would like a friendly, supportive voice?  Social isolation is a major health problem among older adults, and it is known to lead to detrimental health conditions. According to the  National Institute on Aging  (2019), social isolation will impact the health, well-being, and quality of life of numerous older and other age adults now and in the foreseeable future. Due to mandated social distancing resulting from the coronavirus, older adults are and will be spending more time alone and without much or any social interaction of any kind.

Gifts of Gab is an  interim volunteer call-based companion coordination that connects social work students from Stony Brook University with those in need of social interaction to combat the negative effects loneliness can have on long term health.

Phone calls will last 15 to 45 minutes with the number of times per week based on the companions. Phone calls will consist of light social interaction, such as discussing hobbies, memories, weather, games and helping with any finding referrals for assistance, if necessary.

Local History Corner with Brad

China’s most famous attraction offers virtual tours of some of the most visited sections of the wall, 3,000 miles of which are walkable. With much of the country under quarantine measures, the virtual tour  offers  a reprieve from the crowds who normally come from all over the world to see the 2,000-year-old marvel.

My Weekly History Ebook Selection:

In  American Nations,  Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent, and the rivalries and alliances between its component nations, which conform to neither state nor international boundaries. He illustrates and explains why "American" values vary sharply from one region to another. Woodard (author of  American Character: A History of the Epic Struggle Between Individual Liberty and the Common Good ) reveals how intranational differences have played a pivotal role at every point in the continent's history, from the American Revolution and the Civil War to the tumultuous sixties and the "blue county/red county" maps of recent presidential elections.  American Nations  is a revolutionary and revelatory take on America's myriad identities and how the conflicts between them have shaped our past and are molding our future.
