Mixed Media Explorations
Betty Parker
February 20
10:30 am
|
Our friend, Betty Parker, is a well-recognized Florida visual artist works with mixed media. Her work have won several awards and been displayed in galleries and museums. She will share her process and her approach to her art.
"Manipulating paper, which I have painted and designed, by sanding, tearing away, gluing over and repainting, gives me a feeling of being totally creative. It is a dimension above the commercial art and realism courses I took when learning to master oil, watercolor and acrylics. The tactile process conjures up warm childhood memories of my grandmother, mother and sisters who taught me to quilt, knit, crochet and sew. My artwork reflects personal messages, moods and memories of interacting with my own children, looking for answers of life and death during my husband's terminal illness, and my formative years."

Book Group
January 11—“Caste,” by Isabel Wilkerson. In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings.

Global Supply Chain and US National Security
|
What are some of the lasting effects that the pandemic could have on global supply chains and trade?
The shutdown of global supply chains due to the Covid-19 pandemic brought to the fore an issue with the high level of global economic interdependence: what happens when one country is the main source for an item, say face masks, and then can no longer supply the item? Countries suddenly unable to meet the demand for certain supplies are faced with growing calls for economic nationalism. What are some of the lasting effects that the pandemic could have on global supply chains and trade? How would this affect national security?

Florida Tech Trek 2021 is now in the planning stages
In June 2019 there were two Tech Trek Camps, with 48 girls attending each camp. In June 2020 we had planned for two camps, one in DeLand at Stetson University and the other at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter but we could not move forward with those plans due to COVID-19.
In 2021 we plan to hold two virtual camps: one for the girls selected for the 2020 camps and one for the girls to be selected in March 2021. The girls who apply will be able to choose which session of the camp they prefer to attend. Exact late June or early July dates for the camps have not been determined, yet, but the dates will be announced in February 2021 The camp formats will be similar although the core courses and the workshops may have different offerings and the field trips will be virtual visits to Florida STEM locations.
This Tech Trek Florida Camp Video will give you an idea of the type and range of activities that the girls participate in place during their week of camp.
We missed our girls last summer and can’t wait to move forward for our Summer 2021 camps!

What is YOUR Legacy?
In these difficult times
The bonds of friendship and commitment continue to be sources of strength for AAUW and our members. We care passionately about achieving equity for women and girls and we care deeply about one another.
As the pandemic passes grim 6-month and 200,000-death milestones amidst continued upheaval and uncertainty on many fronts, we’ve heard from members who are wondering about its impact on gifts they’ve arranged or are considering. Some have a plan in mind. Others simply want to think out loud with us as they weigh the options. We want all our members to know: If you have questions about current giving or a planned gift or just want to talk things through more generally, we’re here for you. Whether you are looking for how to get started or want details about gifts that pay income to you now, provide support for AAUW in the future, or impact our crucial, mission-focused work today, we welcome your questions and are available to help provide the information you seek. Whatever your situation, we are most grateful for everything you do to advance equity for all.
Did you know?
It is mportant rnot only to make sure your own estate plan is up to date, but also to talk to your family members about your wishes.
In a 2019 survey carried out by Caring.com, 57% of adults in the United States say that they don’t have a will or trust, even though 76% of people surveyed think estate planning is important.
Estate planning is often a difficult subject to broach, as it brings the unpleasant topics of aging and death to the forefront of our minds. Nevertheless, creating an estate plan can provide peace of mind for you and your loved ones by ensuring your life savings are protected, plans are in place in the event of an illness, and property is passed down according to your wishes.
Whether you would like to learn more about estate planning in general or tax-wise ways to include AAUW as a part of your legacy, we are here to help. You may contact Heather Miller, AAUW Advancement Director at millerh@aauw.org.
