While the most recent LCRA test of samples from Lake Travis collected late last month did not detect toxic blue-green algae, it's still recommended to use caution with your pets in any part of the lake, specifically from them touching or ingesting algae. People should also continue to avoid contact with algae in the lakes as well. For humans, algae toxins can cause skin and eye irritation or rashes, and severe reactions can include diarrhea, cramps, vomiting, dizziness and numbness in the lips, fingers and toes. For dogs, symptoms can creep up in minutes and include drooling, vomiting, weakness, difficulty breathing, seizures and even death.
LCRA expects algae to continue to grow as the weather gets hotter. It's a season when toxicity from blue-green algae is historically at its highest. LCRA cautions that it is likely there will be additional toxicity reports later this summer.
LCRA began monitoring algae and toxicity levels in February after a dog died shortly after playing in water around Travis Landing in the Hudson Bend area.
You can minimize your risk of exposure to toxic algae by:
- Avoiding areas with algae or areas that are stagnant.
- Keeping your dog leashed near shorelines, if possible.
- Preventing dogs from consuming lake water, algal material or other shoreline debris.
- Not letting dogs lick their fur or paws after getting out of the water.
- Rinsing your dog after contact with lake water.
- Taking your pet to a veterinarian immediately if he/she becomes sick after swimming.

'Concert In The Park' This Sunday |
The Lakeway Arts Committee is hosting a special 'Concert in the Park' at the Lakeway Hurst Creek Sculpture Garden located next to the Lakeway Justice Complex at 104 Cross Creek. The event will take place this Sunday, August 1 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and feature artist Jordan Moser (pictured). Moser writes and performs literary folk-country music that is quietly wise, with memorable melodies and gut-punching lyricism. He has been recording and self-releasing his own music for more than 10 years. Bring your lawn chairs and/or your picnic blanket to enjoy this FREE event under the shady oak trees. COVID-19 Update: Cases & Hospitalizations Increasing |
Due to an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, Travis County is currently in Stage 4 of the county risk-based guidelines. The guidelines recommend all individuals, whether vaccinated or not vaccinated, wear a proper face covering while indoors with others not from your household. CLICK HERE to review Stage 4 guidelines. Austin Public Health urges the community to get vaccinated and recommends that people wear a face covering where and when appropriate.
Travis County continues to offer multiple COVID-19 vaccine distribution pop-up events throughout the weekend. No appointments are necessary. CLICK HERE for those details and locations.
While local guidance continues to recommend face coverings and vaccinations, Governor Abbott's most recent Order issued earlier this week prevents governmental entities from requiring any person to wear a face covering, and also prevents government entities from compelling an individual to receive a COVID-19 vaccine administered under an emergency use authorization. COVID-19 Cases and hospitalizations continue to climb in the region. A total of 88,887 positive cases have been reported to date in Travis County. There have been a total of 2,889 cases in the Lakeway area (zip codes 78734, 78738 and 78669) since the start of the pandemic (up 71 cases from the same time last week, compared to a rise of 36 the previous week). There are currently 2,365 active cases at this time in Travis County (up from 1,315 last week) and a seven-day moving average of 272 hospitalizations in the region (up from 191 last week). NEW: Colin's Hope Event
Registration is now open for the first-ever Colin's Hope Kids Swim / Run and Colin's Hope Family Fun Adventure. The event will take place at the Lakeway Swim Center on August 29 and is hosted by and benefiting Colin's Hope, which teaches parents, caregivers and children about water safety to prevent drowning. The Colin's Hope Kids Swim/Run is a timed swimming and running event for kids of all abilities ages 4 to 15. The Colin's Hope Family Fun Adventure is an untimed 2 person water and land event for ages 3 and up designed to be a fun time for the whole family. NEW: Shark Week Activities
The popularity of Shark Week has crept onto the shores of Lake Travis. There will be plenty of fun when Shark Week takes ahold of Lakeway August 6 through August 12. Lakeway Shark Week will kick off on Friday, August 6 with a 'Shark in the Park' Scavenger Hunt happening all week at City Park, followed that Friday evening with a movie showing of "The Meg" at the Lakeway Swim Center. On Saturday, August 7, there will be a 'Shark Pool Party' at Lakeway Swim Center complete with shark-themed games, photo ops, prizes and a chance to ride a 'tame' shark. Pool entry fees apply.
