Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

Yes, there is virtue in living a rich emotional life, one with people at the center. I think we have all learned just how fragile the material world is and what carried us through these tough times, if not our personal relationships. But there are times when the material world, and the emotional world come together, and that is especially true with handmade items.

We knit for family. We knit for friends. We knit for pets and babies and sometimes even for strangers.

And with each object, we give not only a sweater or a hat, we give a memory.

Some of the most precious items in our homes, are things that belonged to loved ones, long gone. And as beautiful as the item may be, its real value is in the memory, right?

That is especially true of handmade garments. Do you have an afghan your grandmother made? Will your children, or grandchildren, or friend have an item made with your two hands?

There is so much emotional context to our craft. The love and memories flow two ways, because as you are making your project, aren’t you thinking about who the recipient is, imagining them wearing it proudly. So much love is put into these items.

Who is knit-worthy?

Well, anyone we want to express our compassion for, even a stranger who may benefit from a winter hat.

Even though the object itself may outlast its usefulness, the memory is forever.
OK so you have the child who will put the sweater in the wash - make them an afghan instead! The new parent who will stare at the beautiful sweater until the baby grows out of it - they will most likely keep it and pass it down. Many of us have ponchos from the 70's or heirloom baby blankets back from decades ago.

One of our teachers, Carolyn, has a baby blanket that is passed down through the family with each new baby’s initials and birthdate embroidered on it.

Keri was given a beautiful blanket made by two of her friends. She is an amazing knitter, but that blanket is so special to her because of the thought - and yes it's gorgeous.

Ok, so maybe happiness can’t be bought, but we believe it can be knit (or crocheted.)

What's New?
The ACADIA Blue Purl 1-Row Easy Peasy Fancy Scarf
Most of the colors of this scarf sold out so we made new kits using ultra soft Fibre Co. Acadia, a merino, alpaca, silk blend that has amazing drape while retaining wonderful stitch definition. The extra yardage from Acadia will yield a longer scarf to cuddle around your neck. The free pattern is included with this kit as well and can be found online or in our shop.

It's a long name with only 1 row of instructions but we love it! Tam made up a simple pattern inspired by sequence knitting & we love how fun & easy it is. Yes, she binged Bridgerton on Netflix while knitting the sample, but everyone needs some brain candy sometimes.

The scarf uses 1 skein each of 4 colors and a size US 6 needle. All you need to know is how to knit & purl, no decreases, increases or crazy tricks, this is a great 2nd project for a beginner.
Simple and Sweet Beret
The name says it all. We love a cute little beret by ConnieLene Johnston. Sure, you can't actually take it to Paris right now, but wear it while enjoying a croissant au chocolat & cafe au lait and dream, maybe we can travel again by Fall.

Our kit uses 2 balls of Rowan Cashmere Tweed, a soft classic yarn. The pattern is free & included with each kit for $25! Find it online or in the shop.
Easy Goes It Shawl
A simple, advanced beginner-level shawl, this piece uses Claudia Lust, a silk/merino lace weight held with Rowan Kidsilk Haze. The shawl starts with a simple 3-stitch cast on using a US 6 needle. You'll practice yarn-overs & simple decreases & increases with this project. This is a good first shawl for beginners ready to try simple lace work. We have kits set up (free pattern by Finicky Creations included) online or in the store.
Lichen and Lace Worsted
Patterns on Ravelry: Dubwath Cowl by Inese Sang, Soundtrack Sweater by Elizabeth Smith, Ridge Mitts by Dawn Catanzaro, Baby and Child Sophisticate by Linden Down
If you haven't checked out the latest arrival of Lichen & Lace Worsted, please ask us to point it out on the your next visit. The colors of this superwash hand dyed yarn are just phenomenal. Use it in sweaters & accessories or any project that needs superwash care. We pulled together some of our recent favorites that would show off the beauty of this hand dyer's work.

All of our Lichen & Lace is available online and in our shop, while supplies last. Email or come visit us to get ideas for this gorgeous colorful yarn.
Berroco Macro
We just received a new Berroco yarn- Macro, a wonderful super bulky. One skein is a whopping 110 yards of solid color. The label calls for a US 19 needle but we recommend using a size US15-17 needle. Either way, this will knit up super fast.

This yarn is fabulous on its own or mixed with Malabrigo Rasta for beautiful multicolored projects. In fact, for many hat or cowl patterns, if you mix Macro with Rasta, you may be able to get 2 items when you alternate the main color & contrast color.

We have so many fun ideas for this yarn, we put together a bundle to share with you on our Ravelry page, found here. You can purchase the yarn online or in store.

Charles VNeck
We love the casual comfort of Joji Locatelli's latest sweater- Charles VNeck. Her patterns are always clear and unfussy with a wide range in sizing. The pattern calls for a fingering weight yarn held with Shibui Tweed Silk Cloud, so we pulled a few combinations for you. Joji also says you can also use "one strand of DK or worsted. EVERYTHING WORKS!"

We love the idea of using a beautiful hand dyed worsted (Lichen & Lace?) for this!

Her pattern on Ravelry is currently 25% off until Friday, that's under $5.00 for a well written sweater pattern.

Yarns are available online or in the store.

Hug Hug Kiss Kiss Shawl
We couldn't resist, we had to jump on the Hug Hug Kiss Kiss bandwagon. Maybe it's the comfort of knitting garter or the fun play of colors. We also love that BlueSky Fibers' Woolstok works great for this project. Their 150g hanks of neutrals pair perfectly with their colorful 50g skeins. We pulled together some of our favorite color combinations for you to check out. You can find the pattern on Ravelry and the yarn online or in the shop.
Simple Stripes
Have you seen this cheerful pullover by Suvi Simola? We love the simplicity of the Simple Stripes pullover and you only need one skein of each stripe for sizes up to XL. Of course we put together a few options from our favorite hand dyed fingering yarns. You can find these combos in our shop, just ask one of us for help. Find the pattern on Ravelry here.

A First ColorWork Sweater?! - right?
OMG - This is Meredith's first colorwork sweater. She had to take out some of the sections and redid it along the way, but her Birkin Sweater by Boyland Knitworks is spectacular! She made it in Baah LaJolla! We have another of Meredith's for next week - stay tuned! Thanks for sharing :)
The Mokume and some socks....
Susan made the Mokume by Jennifer Weissman. This lovely shawl is made Mad Tosh Sock and Baah LaJolla. There was enough leftover to make a pair of Harry Potter Weasley socks! One sock down....
