In Worship This Week: Fish Stories
What do we do with the more “fishy” stories in the scriptures? Where there’s enough to feed 5000 people with just a few loaves and fish? Where Jonah gets eaten by the fish and coughed back up onto the shore? Where Peter walks on water? What do these stories have to tell us about God? How do we find God in the unexpected, the impossible, the far-fetched? How do these stories shift our worldview and give us a glimpse of the kingdom of God? This week's story comes from Matthew 14:22-33 . You can find a link to the scripture here.

Fall Bible Study with Pastor Sarah
This fall, dig deeper into the Bible and how it came to be with Animate: A Bible Study. Pastor Sarah will be leading a faith formation series that explores seven big conversations about the Bible, including the process of creating the Biblical canon we know, the history of the ways we access the scriptures – from parchment to smart phones, how we make sense of the two testaments, the good news of the gospels, the various genres of literature found in the Bible, how we move beyond just reading to allow the Bible to grab us, and take hold in our hearts, and how to find grace in the places where scriptural interpretations have caused wounds. Each week we will begin with a video featuring a leading contemporary Christian voice, including folks like Phyllis Tickle, Rachel Held Evans, Jose Morales, and Will Willimon, followed by a discussion of what we are learning.
Pastor Sarah is offering two sessions of the study each week – Monday evenings at 7:00 pm in person at the church, as well as Tuesdays at noon via Zoom. Journals which accompany the study will be available for purchase in the church office beginning August 23. The cost is $20.

Honoring the Past and Celebrating the Future of UMCE
August 1st was all about Honoring the Past and Celebrating the Future of UMCE. We wouldn’t be worshipping here today if it wasn’t for a group of folks leading up to 1971 that had a vision of starting a Methodist church right here in Evergreen.
Several of our founding members were in worship with us on August 1st, and one in particular is still very active at UMCE. Jeanne Ambrosier is currently or has been involved in many areas, including Bible Study, Choir, Lay Leader, the Backpack program, JOY International, and the Evergreen Shelter program, as well as many community groups outside UMCE, several focusing on education in Jefferson County.
As part of our milestone celebration, UMCE honored Jeanne as a founding member and tireless angel, serving UMCE for 50 years. This angel print will be displayed in our midst to help remind us of her dedication and service to the United Methodist Church of Evergreen.

For the last few years, we have enjoyed skiing at Crested Butte over a long weekend (late January, February or early March). If you are interested in joining us, please contact Dave Loomis, dnloomis@zoho.com for more information.
