Colonial High School

On Friday morning we will be welcoming back a number of our Grenadier students: those that signed up for the Face-to-Face instructional model for this first nine-week quarter. In this issue is a preview of the major health and safety procedures we have set in place for student safety once classes resume in two days. Even if this does not apply to your household at the moment, I think you will appreciate the lengths we have gone to make sure that our students, teachers, and staff will be as safe as possible. That is our primary objective. OCPS has also published a comprehensive Covid-19 Health and Safety Procedures Manual which we encourage all of our Colonial families to look over.

Once again I want to remind our school community of how much I greatly appreciate the flexibility and cooperation extended to this point. I realize that the start of this school year looks very different, but we are all truly in this together. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your week.

It's Great To Be A Grenadier!

What to Know When You Come on Campus . . .visitingcampus
All students and staff on a Colonial High School Campus must follow specific guidelines for our health and safety.

1. Masks must be worn at all times except when seated correctly during lunch and actively eating.

2. All doors are one-way. Only enter through a door that is marked "Go."

3. Do not go through any door marked "Do Not Enter."

4. All hallways have specific flows. Check for signs indicating one-way traffic or stay-to-the-right traffic.

5. All stairs are one-way only. Look for the signs on each set of stairs.

6. Students must follow social-distancing guidelines. This means staying 6 feet away from others.

7. All areas for seating for before school, during lunch, and after school have been marked. In our courtyard, only one student may sit at a table or bench. There are also red tape marks on all planters indicating where you can sit. Make sure to sit only on the tape.

8. It is very important that social distancing remains consistent during lunch. We have several outside serving lines students may use. Make sure to stand 6 feet apart in line. In the cafeteria, only sit on the seats marked with tape. They have already been measured for your safety.

9. Be sure to follow hand washing procedures at all times. Hand sanitizer is provided in every classroom and at the entrance to the cafeteria.

10. All students and staff are asked to self-screen prior to coming onsite. Do not attempt to enter the school if any of the following are present:
  a. Symptoms of COVID-19
  b. A temperature of 100.4 F or higher
  c. Are under evaluation for COVID-19
  d. Have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and not yet cleared to discontinue isolation

Meet Our New ELA Teachers!

Sarah Land
Language Arts Teacher - AICE English Language
Prior Job
This will be my 6th year of teaching in OCPS. I have primarily taught English language arts (ELA) for 8th graders, but have also taught ELA to all middle grade levels as well as intensive reading.

College/Certifications
I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor's in English literature as well as a master's in English language arts education. I also earned a professional copyediting certificate from Emerson College in Boston and for a time used that certification to copyedit cookbooks and proofread a young adult novel. I am certified to teach English language arts for grades 6-12 as well as ESOL endorsement.

Favorite Aspect of Work
My favorite part of teaching is guiding students through the writing process and watching them gain confidence in their writing voice! I also love introducing students to texts that provide mirrors and windows. What I mean by that is sharing with students texts that reflect their experiences (mirrors) but also texts that expand their perspective on the world (windows).

Personal Interests/Hobbies
My family loves to spend being active outdoors, trying out Orlando restaurants, hiking, and taking our dog Hank to the dog park! I'm always ready for an iced coffee, a heartfelt conversation, an engaging audiobook, and a board game with friends!

Aubrey Way
Language Arts - 10th Grade English
Prior Job
Missionary in East Asia

College/Certifications
University of Florida/Temporary Teaching Certificate (English 6-12)

Favorite Aspect of Work
I expect my favorite part will be getting to know the kids.

Personal Interests/Hobbies
I enjoy playing drums and ultimate Frisbee.

Congratulations to Dariel Cruz Rodriguez for being a Commence 2030 Honoree!

The event featured speeches from Civic Superheros like Cory Booker, Andrew Yang, Dwayne Johnson, and more.

SENIORS... Welcome Back!!!!

I understand that this is not the start to your senior year you envisioned. However, in spite of the difficult circumstances we are all facing, we will not be defined by where we start, but rather where we FINISH!

I wanted to take this opportunity to re-introduce myself to many of you. I am the new College and Career Specialist for the GRENADIERS. Ms. Witham and I will partner with your Guidance Counselor to help each of you as we move toward the finish line next May.  Our doors, emails, and phone lines are literally always open if you have questions or need assistance with anything.

I have been working on organizing lots of helpful resources that may guide your decision-making process as you figure out, "What's Next?"

Whether you are considering applying to colleges/universities, technical programs, military branches, or even entering the workforce directly, we are here to assist in any way possible.

If you have questions or need assistance with anything, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

Eddy Witham
