From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates.
Matthew 24:32-51
I know that summer is finally here when I have an opportunity to wet my feet in a cool water - or better yet take a good plunge in a pool or a lake! This year I have set up an inflatable pool in my backyard and discovered with joy that it’s a big hit with my kids. There have been hours of smiles and entertainment, and when they’re done splashing, they come back calmer and happier.
This summer feeling of relaxation and soothing sunshine is something really special. The time when you can put aside agendas and deadlines and truly get lost in a moment of pure meditation of the blue sky above and the lush greenery below. A feeling like this occasionally perches on the soul in prayer too… the moment of connection between us and the Divine!
It’s so interesting to think about spiritual life as an anticipation of summer. The scripture passage above is an introduction to a somewhat frightening passage about preparing for the Lord’s second coming. No one knows that day and hour. What will happen if I’m nowhere near ready? What if I’m at that moment caught up in a pile of laundry or a pile of dishes to put away, or fast asleep when I should be already up and praying or making breakfast for the family?
Yet, when I open my heart in prayer… in the midst of any chaotic activity, the simple words “Our Father” and “your kingdom come” assure me that His Kingdom is already descending. I rejoice at its arrival in the world around me: gentle, healing, beautiful like a summer’s breeze. That’s the good news of the Gospel to hold on to. The Lord is good indeed. There is no need to be afraid.
God bless you!
