From the Headmaster

Quiet Hours
We are now about two weeks into hybrid learning, and our teachers are working very hard to ensure that both our in-person and remote learners keep learning. Although everyone is shouldering this work with grace and determination, the leadership team at Archway Arete is looking for ways to make the work-load tenable for the rest of this quarter and beyond. With this in mind, I am asking teachers to “unplug” after 4 pm each day and to leave email until the following school day. Of course, the reality is that many of our teachers will still be working into the evening, on lesson plans and grading, etc., but these email “quiet hours” will hopefully give our teachers a little space to recharge for the next day. One email that is always welcome is a note of thanks. If you haven’t already, please take a moment to send a quick thank-you email to your child’s teachers--and, don’t forget the specialists!

Family Survey Results 9.11.20
Thank you, families, for taking the time to fill out the family survey released last week. You can see the numeric results of the survey below. I, along with the leadership team, have read through all of your comments and am thankful for your input. It is clear that you recognize all of the hard work of our teachers and staff. It is also clear that while you recognize all of the good things happening, there are still some bumps in the road, particularly for our on-line learners. I know that our teachers are striving to do their best and continue to find ways to make improvements for all of our learners. I would love to hear more from both our in-person and remote learners in the coming weeks. Please join me on the following dates for a Zoom discussion:

SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Galileo Testing
Next week, 2nd-5th grade students will participate in the first round of Galileo benchmark testing in English and math. These network-wide computer-based assessments will require students to use their headphones, so please ensure that your child has brought their pair to school. Distance learners will take the test from home on the same day that their classmates are testing. This testing block will replace the live stream for the day. Students testing from home should do so in a quiet environment. Parents may only provide support with logging on, navigating through the test, and ensuring that all test items were answered. It is essential that parents do not help their children answer the test questions, as doing so will produce invalid data. Keep in mind that these tests are not counted toward students’ grades. While we never focus solely on numerical data points to measure students’ academic growth, the results from these benchmark assessments will be used to inform teachers of areas for support and enrichment for their students.

The testing schedule is as follows:
5th grade: Thursday, September 24th
4th grade: Friday, September 25th
3rd grade: Monday, September 28th
2nd grade: Tuesday, September 29th

Remote students:
  1. Visit http://www.ati-online.com/
  2. Sign In > K-12 Student-Parent Center
  3. Log in with your unique username and PW provided by your teacher
  4. Under Archway Arete, select your homeroom class
  5. Select one of the tests, math or ELA, to take first
(Here is a helpful tutorial on how to log in.)
  1. Take the test and submit when complete
  2. Take the second test and submit when complete
If your child has a question for their teacher or technological issues arise during the test (frozen screen, kicked out of platform, etc.), visit the Zoom provided by your teacher for one-on-one support.
