A Schism in the UMC

Dearest Dido Friends & Family,
You will be hearing and may have already heard in the news that there is a group of United Methodists separating from the United Methodist Church. Due to the current conflict within the United Methodist Church around issues of human sexuality, this faction has decided, rather than to work out their problems within the current United Methodist structure, to form their own church and call it the Global Methodist Church. They have decided to begin this new church on May 1, 2022. I say "they" because I have no relationship with this faction.
Over the years there have been many Methodist churches to schism off what we now call the United Methodist Church for many different reasons. In 1784 what came to be called The United Church of Christ was formed due to a belief that the bishops had too much power in the United Methodist Church at the time. In 1830 the Methodist Protestant Church was formed due to differences in the power structure of the UMC. In 1843 the Wesleyan Methodist Church was formed due to differences over slavery. In 1860 the Free Methodist Church was formed due to differences over Episcopal authority. These churches that chose to leave have been historically smaller and have less influence on behalf of our Savior. I have no reason to believe the new Global Methodist Church will be any different making it less able to make the difference in our world the United Methodist Church is able to make.
It is my preference to follow John Wesley's, the founder of Methodism, understanding of what to do when there is conflict. It is ascribed to him that he once said, “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and, in all things, charity.” Wesley, who was faced with the possibility of a church separation in his time also stated, “It is evil in itself to separate ourselves from a body of living Christian, with whom we were before united, is a grievous breach of the law of love. … It is only when our love grows cold, that we can think of separating from our brethren.” It is my belief that we should, rather than proverbially "taking our ball and leaving," work together as a family of United Methodists, as all families should, to come up with a way for so many people with so many differing opinions to get along.
I believe one wonderful thing about the United Methodist Church is that, other than some very important doctrine such as Christ and Him Crucified and on the third day resurrected, we are not a church that tells our congregations what they must believe. We are, in fact, a thinking church full of educated and opinionated individuals who have lively, sometimes heated, discussions. And yet, we come back to the same thing every single time, LOVE! "Love God, Love Neighbor!" is where United Methodists land and that is the main reason why I remain a member of the United Methodist Church.
Please know there is nothing we must do about the forming of this new church because Dido UMC is already a member of the United Methodist Church and, barring the congregation's overwhelming desire to join this new church, which I do not anticipate, I do not plan on holding churchwide discussions about it. You may hear of other churches in our area who choose to join this new faction and you may have questions as to why. I welcome any discussion you may wish to have with me concerning this issue. As always, my door is open.
May the Lord bless and keep you,
Pastor Jana
A Need for a Motorcycle

Dido UMC supports a United Methodist Church in a small village in Yaukani, Nigeria. Dido has provided the entire village with mosquito nets, helped put their pastor through theology school, and supported the church and village when it experienced a devastating fire. The pastor Jonathon called needing a motorcycle to get to and from the village. He has not yet been able to rebuild the parsonage after the fires and is living in a nearby area with family until his home is rebuilt. Therefore, he needs transportation in the form of a motorcycle. Used motorcycles in Nigeria cost a little over $500. If you would like to give, over and above your regular tithe, to help Jonathon get to and from his church, please mark your giving with "motorcycle." As the need is immediate, this Sunday, April 3 will be the only day we will be collecting funds. Thank you for giving!
