Focus on Mental Health:
Pandemic and post-pandemic Interventions
Robin Gosdin Farrell, DNP, FNP-C and Joy DeBellis, DNP, FNP-C will present a session entitled, “Lessons Learned Moving Forward: Apply SPICES to your life to improve mental health and reach optimal wellness post-COVID.”
The acronym “SPICES,” stands for Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Career, Emotional and Social. This presentation will enumerate work-place stressors and mental health problems, likely provoked by the shortage of providers and personal protective equipment (PPE), deaths of patients, family members and colleagues, and the fear of exposing loved ones at home to COVID-19. These risk factors combined with the stigma surrounding mental illness, southern customs, and the healthcare profession mean many are suffering in silence. Drs. Farrell and DeBellis will discuss that although pharmaceutical interventions for mental illness have shown benefits, these should be combined with non-prescriptive therapies including cognitive behavioral therapy, counseling, lifestyle medicine, and wellness activities.
In concert with NPAA’s conference theme: “A Whole New World: Refresh, Renew, Refocus.” These presenters endorse the need for NPs impacted by the pandemic to refocus on the optimal health dimensions that need to be refreshed to maintain quality of life and function in several areas utilizing the SPICES of life. Then as a collective body, we as NPs need to refocus our mindset and renew our purpose.
