Your Community Brief from Oak Ridge High School
Friday, September 25, 2020

After the last bell this afternoon, we will already be down to the final10 days for the first quarter of 2020-2021. In these two remaining school weeks of Quarter 1 is our Virtual Open House scheduled for this coming Tuesday evening from 5:00-6:30 PM. While this year has a different twist on Open House given the situation, it is still a wonderful opportunity to meet the teachers and learn a little bit more about the classes and digital learning. If you have a student at Oak Ridge, I do hope you will participate as the entire event will be conducted in real time.

As for this issue, you will find an expanded section related to our College and Career Center which includes some excellent opportunities and important dates. October is also normally a very special month each year when it comes to annual events that directly or indirectly affect our school community, so we have included some reminders herein.

Stay safe, enjoy your weekend, and good luck to our Pioneer football team vs. Lake Mary tonight!

Pioneer Academic Spotlight
Anthony "Marley" Torres, National Merit Scholar

Congratulations to our very own Anthony "Marley" Torres on being a semifinalist.  To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists have to fulfill requirements to advance to Finalist standing. Each Semifinalist submits a detailed scholarship application, which includes essays and information about extracurricular achievements, awards, and leadership positions. Semifinalists also have to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by a school official, and earn SAT scores that confirm their qualifying test performance.
Looking Ahead: Themes for the Month of October

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women. During the month of October, the district will have the opportunity to help raise community awareness about the importance of early detection.
LGBTQ+ Awareness Month
LGBTQ+ Awareness Month is when we come together to encourage students and staff to create awareness and understanding on issues facing LGBTQ+ children and youth. It is a time when communities can unite nationwide to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and provide support through events, activities, outreach and education.

National Bullying Prevention Month
The School Board proclaims October as National Bullying Prevention Month in Orange County Public Schools. For the month of October, individuals and community members across the district and our nation unite and are encouraged to raise awareness of bullying prevention, outreach and education. Everyone is encouraged to wear the color Orange on October 21, to demonstrate their commitment to inclusion, tolerance and acceptance.

Disability History and Awareness Weeks
The 2008 Florida Legislature declared the first two weeks of October to be observed as Disability History and Awareness Weeks. The goals of disability and awareness instruction include:
  • Emphasize better treatment of individuals with disabilities and increase attention to preventing bullying or harassment of students with disabilities.
  • Provide encouragement to individuals, to develop their self-esteem, resulting in having confidence to pursue and obtain postsecondary education, enter the workforce and contribute to their communities.
  • Reaffirm a commitment to the full inclusion of and equal opportunities for all individuals with disabilities.

Opportunity for Oak Ridge Parents!
Our new college search platform for students is now out. You are invited to learn about how it works to help your child.

Parents, we are introducing a new college search platform called Scoir (pronounced Score). Scoir will be replacing our old system Naviance and is designed to break down the college admissions process into manageable steps that will help students evaluate all the important college admissions questions one step at a time. Scoir will provide students, parents, counselors, and colleges a dynamic platform to focus on matching postsecondary institutions with student goals and interests.

We would like to invite you to participate in a parent training on this platform which will be provided via WebEX. Links to participate in the Parent WebEx Are below. The trainings are scheduled three separate times:
  • September 25 from 12-1pm,
  • September 28 from 7-8pm
  • September 29 from 7-8pm.
