Part of Hyde Park Building Collapses in Early Morning Fire, Firefighter Injured
A firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning at a blaze in a commercial building that houses a Chase Bank branch in the Hyde Park area and burned for 90 minutes before being extinguished. Part of the building collapses during the fire, reported at 12:24 a.m. at 4401 Crenshaw Blvd., near Vernon Avenue. Firefighters found fire burning through the roof of the two-story building, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Four Injured, Five Structures Damaged by Fire in Hollywood
Fast moving flames damaged five residential buildings and led to four persons sustaining injury in the Hollywood Studio District Friday morning. The Los Angeles Fire Department was notified by a 9-1-1 caller at 9:08 AM on Friday, January 22, 2021 of a structure fire at 1245 North Bronson Avenue in Hollywood. Firefighters arrived quickly to find a vacant and boarded one story home in a large unkempt lot, fully involved with fire, with flames extending to a vacant home on the same parcel.

Fire Rips Through Shuttered Sun Valley Restaurant
It took firefighters several hours Wednesday night to extinguish a greater-alarm blaze which ripped through a vacant restaurant in Sun Valley. The fire was reported at a 5,736 square-foot former dine-in restaurant in the 8400 block of Sunland Boulevard at 8:41 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Within about 20 minutes, the 83 firefighters assigned to the greater-alarm fire had taken a defensive position as flames overtook the building. Shortly before 10 p.m., the blaze was upgraded to a major emergency fire with 111 LAFD personnel assigned.

Firefighters respond to large blaze that engulfed structure in Sylmar
Firefighters responded to a blaze that broke out at a large structure in Sylmar Friday morning. The fire started about 10:45 a.m. in the 13000 block of North Fellows Avenue and included at least one vehicle, according to a news alert from the Los Angeles Fire Department. Sky5 was over the scene as the fire burned near a couple of homes and several trees. Sustained winds of about 15 mph in the area were creating challenges for firefighters, the Fire Department stated. About a dozen horses were seen in an adjacent field trying to run from the fire. The Fire Department said they may require evacuation,but seemed to be unharmed.

Crews Battle Fire At Encino Apartment Building; Firefighter Injured
A fire broke out Tuesday evening at an apartment building in Encino, injuring a firefighter and forcing some occupants to evacuate. Crews were called to 5310 Zelzah Ave., between White Oak and Linley avenues, where initial reports indicated a fire started in the recreation room on the first livable floor of the building with three stories of units above a parking garage, according to Margaret Stewart with the Los Angeles Fire Department. Stewart wrote in an update about 7:40 p.m. that the fire spread “into an unknown number of units” and some tenants were being evacuated from the building while crews on scene requested more resources.

Fire burns unit at Sun Valley motel
Firefighters extinguished a fire Sunday night inside one unit at a Sun Valley motel. The blaze inside the Mt. View Motel at 8065 San Fernando Road was reported at 9:17 p.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange. Firefighters kept the flames confined to one unit, Prange said. The department dispatched 34 firefighters to the scene. They extinguished the fire in under 20 minutes.

Firefighters Rescue Man from Burning Home in Cypress Park
A man was injured and hospitalized following a house fire late Thursday night in LA's Cypress Park neighborhood. Firefighters responded to the 3400 block of N. Maceo Street at about 11:49 p.m. and found a "one story, single family dwelling with fire showing at the back of the house," said Margaret Stewart with the Los Angeles Fire Department. Crews pulled a man about 50 years old from the burning home, according to Stewart.

Crews Stop Forward Progress After Brush Fire Breaks Out In Sylmar
Los Angeles Fire Department crews battled a brush fire Tuesday night in Sylmar. According to the department, the blaze started at about 7:47 p.m. and appeared to be centered in a nursery on the northbound side of the 210 freeway with extension to the southbound side of the freeway. The department said fire crews were making “good progress” as of 8:30 p.m. and had released air resources following multiple water drops. Shortly after 9 p.m., fire crews were able to stop all forward progress of the blaze.

Firefighters Battle House Fire in San Pedro
Firefighters battled a fire inside the attic of a two-story home in San Pedro, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. No injuries were reported. The fire at 1342 W. Ofarrell St., just south of West Summerland Ave., extended to the second floor of the home and one other structure is exposed, Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The fire broke out after 2:30 p.m. and it took firefighters about 29 minutes to knock it down.

Reseda Wind-Driven Vegetation and Structure Fires Threaten Homes
A wind-driven tree fire spread through several blocks burning structures and vegetation. On Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:53 AM, LAFD responded to a structure fire at the 18000 block of Elkwood St. The fire appeared to have started in ornamental vegetation near Strathern St, then was fueled by wind and pushed several blocks to the south across Blythe, Arminta, Elkwood and Ingomar. A post-fire survey revealed that only two homes sustained minor fire damage, and four out buildings were damaged or destroyed.

Vacant NoHo Home Goes Up in Flames
It took 34 Los Angeles Fire Department responders just 24 minutes to extinguish a fully-involved vacant one story home in the 6100 block of Hazelhurst Place early January 23, 2021.

Father, daughter killed by power lines that fell during rainstorm in Panorama City
An investigation is underway after a father and daughter were found dead at a home in Panorama City Monday morning. Authorities got a call about power lines down in the 14700 block of Tupper Street shortly after 3:30 a.m., a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson said. Arriving officers arrived to find two people dead at the scene, the spokesperson said. A family member at the home described the two victims as a father and daughter.

Fiery crash caught on camera as vehicle flies into embankment near downtown LA freeway
A horrifying crash was caught on camera as a vehicle flew off a downtown Los Angeles overpass and crashed into trees alongside the 110 Freeway, and the quick actions of several good Samaritans may have helped save the driver's life. The crash was reported about 10:50 p.m. Thursday near the Sixth Street exit where the driver was trapped inside the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

4 Big Rigs Traffic Collision on Northbound 5 Freeway in Granada Hills
Around 12:05 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to a multi-vehicle collision on the northbound 5 Freeway. The collision occurred on the truck route of the NB 5 freeway, north of the 210 freeway, involving a jackknifed big rig leaking diesel fuel from a punctured 100 gallon tractor (not trailer) tank. No fire was reported. LAFD personnel stopped the leak and worked to contain the spill.

January is Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month
Fire fighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service. In 2019, more than 75% of the names of fire fighters added to the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Wall of Honor in Colorado Springs, Colorado, were of members who died from occupational cancer. In partnership with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN), the IAFF has designated January as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month.
