AAUW Marin Recognizes 2 College of Marin Women with STEM Achievement Awards
AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund president Nancy Lubamersky presented STEM Achievement awards to two College of Marin students at the March 16th meeting of the College’s STEM Learning Community, an event celebrating Women’s History month. The awardees, who were selected by a panel of COM STEM instructors, will each receive $1,000! Recipients are Jenna Nicolas (pictured left) and Jocelyn (Josie) Martinez. Jenna tutors students at COM and has participated in the San Quentin Prison University Project. She hopes to complete teaching credentials for STEM subjects while completing her undergraduate degree. Josie is a public health science major with an interest in the health sciences. She participated in the Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program in 2021. Both women will transfer to a 4-year college in the Fall.
A special thank you to Nancy Major, our branch COM liaison for connecting us to Paul Daubenmire, director of the college’s STEM Learning Community. Paul coordinated the application process and the event, which included a panel of women in STEM. Thanks also to Keith Rosenthal, Director of Advancement, for facilitating the financial transaction.
The STEM Achievement awards are in addition to the six $1000 scholarships we will give to COM students next Fall. Thanks again to donors to the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund for your continued support of students at our local colleges. Click HERE to see this year’s Honor Roll of Donors.

Celebrate AAUW and the 50th Anniversary of Title IX!
Our next branch program is Saturday, April 16th at 10:00 am via zoom and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX. To highlight the impact and importance of Title IX, our featured speakers will be Dominican University’s Director of Athletics, Amy Henkleman, and student athletes. Amy supervises 11 NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports teams plus MCLA Division 1 lacrosse. She is the PacWest Conference liaison for senior women administrators as well chair of the PacWest Governance Committee and a member of the PacWest Championships and Strategic Positioning Committee.
Join us to hear what is happening 50 years after the passage of Title IX. Title IX is not just about sports – it is about leveling the field in all areas. Like other legislation AAUW has successfully championed, Title IX is about gender equity and has given girls and women more opportunities to gain confidence and learn team and leadership skills.
The name of our branch’s Named Gift Honoree will be revealed by our AAUW Funds Chair, Dale Satake. Each year, we honor members who have given extraordinary service to the branch, helping us to further AAUW’s mission to advance equity for women and girls. Our previous honorees are listed on our branch website.
Plus catch up with new and old friends on our breakout session! It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to gather in person. Thank goodness for Zoom in the meantime.
Please watch for the separate invitation in April.

MEET 50-YEAR MEMBER FLORENCE GARVIE
Florence joined the AAUW Mill Valley Branch, which became the Southern Marin branch and then merged with AAUW Marin, in 1960 to become involved in her community and meet other young, educated mothers. She said in the early days they would have so many attendees at their book group that they would hire a babysitter for all the kids! And these many years later Florence is still an active member of the What Are You Reading? book group. Florence helped her husband Bill with the business side of his boat building company while raising their children. She’s had an adventurous life, starting with moving frequently while her father was in the Army. She decided she wanted to learn to fly shortly after graduating from Pomona College, got eight hours of instruction and then started flying. When she moved to Marin and started teaching at Ross School, she bought a sailboat without knowing how to sail – but met her husband through that adventure. Staying in touch with her four children, seven grandchildren and three greats keeps her busy and engaged. Florence, we’re so glad you still support AAUW’s mission and are part of our AAUW Marin family.

The annual election of four directors to the national board starts on April 6 and ends on May 16th.
This year both Cherie Sorokin and Dale Satake from our own branch are nominees! Congratulations to both, and let’s have a great turnout from AAUW Marin in their support!
It’s easy to vote online. Just watch your email for notice of the opening of voting and take a minute to vote that same day. Saves having to search for the notice later.
Members will also be voting on two administrative amendments to AAUW bylaws which hopefully will pass easily. Both streamline future election processes and save AAUW money and administrative time.
