Dave Atkin MD was recently honored to be the 2021 recipient of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Humanitarian Award. Here is his story:
When I accepted my award a few weeks ago. I did my best to parlay my "5 seconds of fame" at the Academy into a small step forward for diversity & inclusivity.
FACTS:
1. 93% of Orthopedists in the US are white males
2. 3% of Orthopedists in the US are white females
2. The 4% of Orthopedists in the US, who are of color, care for more than
50% of the patients of color,
and more than 70% of the non-English speaking patients in the US
Take a look at my acceptance video, when time permits

After the video, I gave an impassioned speech, as well. One poignant moment was when Dr. James A. Hill MD, an older African-American gentleman, who won the AAOS Diversity award came up to the podium simply said:
"I look forward to a day when these types of awards no longer need to exist…"
Gave me the chills.
I am trying to get this DEI message out, please feel free to share with the class or the broader Berkeley community, if you see fit.
With gratitude & respect,
Dave Atkin MD
