Monthly Observances

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October, organizations and university communities like UC Berkeley observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month to highlight the importance of early diagnosis, educate about treatment options, and raise research funds. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. Approximately 1 in 8 women develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.

Disabled Empowerment in Higher Education Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is also disability awareness month. This year it is especially meaningful because it is the 30th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Check this page to learn more about the new Disability Community Cultural Center and all the events that are planned related to disability awareness.

Threads of Impact - Student Podcast

A student run Podcast series from the School of Public Health, University of California - Berkeley

Episode Description:

We are excited to interview Dr. Seema Handu, who is the India Country Director at Pronto International. PRONTO International aims to optimize care during birth. They develop and implement innovative training strategies that result in significant improvements in both process and impact measures related to obstetric and neonatal emergency care. Seema shares her experience in working with Pronto and underscores the importance of investing in maternal health.

Investing in maternal health will not only help save mothers' lives, it will improve the lives of the generations to come. It will improve our world.

Study International: Innovate your way to public health leadership with an online MPH from UC Berkeley

Read the article here.

Dave Atkin MD was recently honored to be the 2021 recipient of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Humanitarian Award. Here is his story:

When I accepted my award a few weeks ago. I did my best to parlay my "5 seconds of fame" at the Academy into a small step forward for diversity & inclusivity.

FACTS:

1. 93% of Orthopedists in the US are white males

2. 3% of Orthopedists in the US are white females

2. The 4% of Orthopedists in the US, who are of color, care for more than

50% of the patients of color,

and more than 70% of the non-English speaking patients in the US

Take a look at my acceptance video, when time permits

https://youtu.be/g8UHfRGRcZU

After the video, I gave an impassioned speech, as well. One poignant moment was when Dr. James A. Hill MD, an older African-American gentleman, who won the AAOS Diversity award came up to the podium simply said:

"I look forward to a day when these types of awards no longer need to exist…"

Gave me the chills.

I am trying to get this DEI message out, please feel free to share with the class or the broader Berkeley community, if you see fit.

With gratitude & respect,

Dave Atkin MD
