COMING SOON: THE OBSERVATION LOUNGE

Stories of the SS United States from Those Who Walked Her Decks
The SS United States remains an incredible engineering and design innovation and an iconic symbol of her namesake nation. But the Big U is more than a 990-foot-long masterpiece in steel and aluminum. She teems with the stories and memories of the passengers, officers, and crew who walked her decks.

To celebrate and share these stories, the Conservancy is launching an expanded oral history initiative, "The Observation Lounge". This builds on the Conservancy's decade of work collecting and documenting the ship's history. We have connected with hundreds of former passengers and crew through events, interviews, letters, photographs, and home movie footage. These materials are an essential component of the Conservancy's growing curatorial collection.

Now, we are embarking on an exciting new phase of this work. On October 19, we will be launching an audio recording series, which will feature interviews with fascinating people with personal connections to the SS United States. You won't want to miss our first set of stories, ranging from the adventures of a night porter (who saw an unexpected show in the theater!) to a swimming pool elevator operator (who made a big mistake!) to an adventurous passenger who snuck into one of the ship's lifeboats (when the ship was not sinking!)

"The Observation Lounge" will be an ongoing project. If you are interested in participating, please use the link below to contact our curatorial team. We would love to hear from you!

CONSERVANCY RECEIVES DONATION FROM
NAVY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION'S "DOLLARS FOR DOERS"

Our Thanks to Stanton Daywalt for His Continued Support
For a fourth consecutive year, the SS United States Conservancy has been selected as a beneficiary of a $1,000 grant from Navy Federal Credit Union's "Dollars for Doers" program. The generous contribution comes thanks to the passionate support of Stanton Daywalt (pictured here), the Co-Chair of the Conservancy's Hampton Roads Chapter and member of the Conservancy's Advisory Council.

The "Dollars for Doers" program recognizes, supports, and encourages the contributions of Navy Federal employees' volunteer efforts, awarding a $1,000 donation on behalf of 100 qualified employee team members, to the nonprofit organization of their choice.

Out of the hundreds of applications submitted, Stanton was selected as a grant recipient, and he has once again chosen to award his grant to the SS United States Conservancy. A longtime admirer of America's Flagship, Stanton first visited the vessel in Newport News, VA, as a young boy in 1989, and then again in 1992 just prior to the ship's towing overseas for remediation. Last year, Stanton shared a lovingly detailed model of the SS United States that features an incredible attention to historical detail, along with such creative flourishes as the initials of the ship's designer, William Francis Gibbs, on the flags attached to the funnels.

THE BIG U CONTINUES TO INSPIRE...

"You never know when she may be needed for our country’s sake. She deserves an overhaul and generous maintenance budget. America’s flagship has a lot of good years ahead of her."
