Happy Sunday, Pride!

I hope each of you had a wonderful and restful weekend. Last week, I had the opportunity to clap and cheer for our students on several occasions. I cheered on our Girls on the Run team at their final race, our boys at their first two basketball games of the season, our cheerleaders who cheered at the game, our high school students as they presented their final physical animation projects, and our elementary Terrific Kids.

I, like many of us, love clapping and cheering for our kids during these events. But, why do we do that?

  1. It lets them know that they are important. When we make time to praise our children, no matter the age, we tell them they are inherently valuable and have worth. I am amazed when my kids remember that my wife and/or I attended their events. (I might have forgotten, but they didn't.) Our presence at these events in their lives really means something to them.
  2. It celebrates their effort and hard work. No one gets to the final game or performance without persevering through long practices and rehearsals. It is the payoff for the daily deposits of effort and learning. These recognitions help us, as adults, remind our children that the struggle and hard work they put into the task each day finally paid off. Effort, not just ability, is a great indicator of future success. Our children need to know that.
  3. It brings a time of closure and evaluation. Once our kids finished a season or semester, we discussed whether or not they wanted to continue. We wanted to talk with them about what they learned and if they enjoyed it. There are "seasons of life" and we affirmed to them that they could make commitments for a period of time and then reflect on their participation. A "yes" said now did not have to be a "yes" for forever. This time of evaluation reassures our children the activity is about them and we are not "reliving our glory days" through them. Just because it was good for us does not always mean it is good for them. Our claps and cheers can be signals that "You made it!" and "You finished!" with no expectations that they will continue.

As this first semester wraps up, I hope you will make every effort to be there for your children and to celebrate their success. Let's be intentional with our words and affirmations so our kids know what our praise really means. We simply want them to hear the right messages from us. Please don't hesitate to share with us their success at home and in the community. We are proud of all they accomplish.

In Strength and Blessings,

~Dr. Compton

A Note from Ms. Carr

Greetings,

I hope everyone has had a fabulous week. I failed to mention in my last article that my Girls On the Run team would be running/walking in the Reindeer Romp 5K at Christmasville as our concluding event for this fall. Now I can finally say I have completed a 5K and survived. I may have been one of the last to finish, but I finished. I have a medal to prove it. I feel very accomplished and proud of myself. I am so proud of the girls too! Congratulations to all my Girls, their parents and all the other girls, runners and walkers that made it to the finish line (and any who didn’t). It was a fabulous turnout and such an honor to coach my team this fall. I hope to do it again next fall.

If anyone is interested in being a coach for us to have a team this spring, please email me for the information (kcarr@riverwalkacademy.com).

This week I have been busy reading Interrupting Chicken and talking about Respect with more classes. I have been emphasizing that Respect isn’t just about being kind and material/physical things, or Please/Thank you and manners - it is about feelings as well and recognizing differences. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and individual thoughts and we need to respect the diversity and uniqueness of ourselves and others.

This week I also met with individual students and planned groups for the coming weeks/months. Mrs. Menges and I have worked more on our Counseling Program Plan. It is a rewarding experience. We hope it helps everyone but it has especially helped us.

We started our 12 Holidays celebration this week and it has been fun seeing all our staff’s creativity and joy. The students get to participate with us the last 5 days before winter break. I can’t wait to see what they come up with. This time of year is hard for a lot of people, but every bit of positivity, happiness and excitement spreads and helps it be a bit better.

Have another Prideful Week! Let me know if you need anything!

Hugs,

Ms. Carr

Map Testing

We will have Middle of the Year (MOY) ELA and Math MAP testing the week December 12, 2022 - December 16, 2022. Your child's teacher will send more information on the specific days their class will be testing.

On the day of testing, please encourage your child to do their best. It is normal for your child to not know all the answers and this is not a pass or fail test. It will not affect their grade. The results from this test will help the teacher know what your child is ready to learn and what areas they may need more support in.

A Note from Dr. Dempsey

Hello Pride!!

We have had a great week. As we enter the last full week before break, I have a few reminders:

  • We will be MAPS testing on Monday (ELA) and Tuesday (Math), our ENG 2 students will be taking their EOC's. Please be sure your student is well rested and has had breakfast. Thank you to those who attended (either in person or online) the Caregiver 101 session on Tuesday evening.
  • We have sent out a survey to try and gauge how we can better meet the needs and concerns of our community. If you have not already done so, please complete the survey that was emailed to you on Thursday.

We greatly appreciate your support and feedback!! Please make sure your student has completed all work for their classes as we finish the semester, encourage them to finish strong! We need your assistance in making sure that students are not brining blankets to school, while we understand the weather is chilly, the blankets are a disruption to the learning environment and can pose a safety hazard.

As always, thank you for trusting us with your student and please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. Pride Believe. Pride Achieve!!

Warmly,

Christy Dempsey

A Note from Ms. Menges

Hello Everyone!

This week for me started out as a week full of testing, but I am glad I got to see our York Tech students more than usual over on the main campus. I am super proud of their hard work and hope they gave it their all. I know it can be challenging for students to sit in a room for long periods of time in silence while taking a test, but these students got through it like champs!

Here's what we have going on in the coming week...

Things to note:

-Those who took the PSAT on October 12th, you should be able to see your scores in College Board at this point. Let me know if you have any questions.

-11th and 12th graders, don't forget to check out our biweekly newsletter called "The Upperclassmen Tribune." This will give you great resources regarding college, scholarships, and careers.

-9th graders, IGP (individualized graduation plan) meetings are going to start up in January. Parents be on the lookout for an email where you will be able to sign up for a time slot to meet about your student.

-6th through 12th graders, on Tuesday December 13th we will be having a presentation given by a representative from the South Carolina Governors School of the Arts and Humanities. This will be for students only during the school day. Teachers will bring their students to the MPR for the meeting. Please think of any questions you may have if you're interested in their programs. If any 10th-12th graders are interested in coming, the presentation starts at 2:20pm.

Quote of the Week:

Dear Riverwalk Academy families,

The End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP) is a statewide assessment program of end-of-course tests for gateway courses awarded units of credit in English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The EOCEP encourages instruction in the specific standards for the courses, encourages student achievement, and documents the level of students’ mastery of the academic standards.....
