President's Message

Happy New Year and welcome to 2023! I hope that you all enjoyed your holidays, and your year is off to a great start! I am looking forward to an amazing year – both personally and for WTS. As a parent of a high school senior, I am excited about participating in all the last semester activities. As President of the WTS Greater DFW Chapter, I am excited about the year ahead of us. At WTS Greater DFW, our Executive Board serves a two-year term, which means we are halfway through our term. If you are not sure who our Executive Board Members are, you can visit our Board of Directors page.

If you have been wondering about how to become more involved with WTS, the beginning of the year is a great time to get plugged in. We have several committees that are always looking for volunteers to help with a variety of activities. If you have a passion for student relations and mentoring, banquet and golf tournament planning, communications and social media, or monthly programs and technical tours, please reach out to anyone on our Leadership Team to learn more.

We already have several events planned for early this year. Right out of the gate, we will have our Annual Membership Meeting next month. Our professional development event with guest speaker Teri Fisher of Insight Strategies will be held later this spring. We have also started planning for our Annual Awards Banquet. This is one of the bookend events for our chapter when we come together to celebrate our award and scholarship recipients and raise money for our foundation and programs. If you’re interested in participating in the planning process, please reach out to Gwen Jurisich at Gwen.Jurisich@hdrinc.com or Lani Marshall at ylmarshall@bec-inc.com. We also have several events planned for our UTA Student Chapter and TransportationYOU students including a career fair, technical programs/tours, and Capital Summit in Washington D.C. Be on the lookout for more information in your inbox about all of these events.

January has been designated as Mental Wellness Month in an effort to recognize the importance of attending to our mental health. Mental health issues have long been stigmatized in many cultures, including our own. Thankfully, and in part due to research, the emphasis that mental health is just as important as physical health is an idea that has been spreading. Try connecting with mental health professionals, expressing gratitude daily, connecting socially, exercising, and sleeping well to improve your overall mental health. As always, remember to stay safe, take care of yourself, and respect each other. And don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Introducing the

WTS Distinguished Speaker Series

The WTS International 2023 Distinguished Speaker Series highlights the voices of top-level experts, speakers, authors, and academics, speaking on topics crucial to equity, diversity, and access in transportation.

On February 17th, join us to hear from Dr. Mia Bay, UPENN professor, historian, and author of Traveling Black: A Story of Race and Resistance, which received a 2022 PROSE Award for Excellence in American History, was a New York Times Critics' Top Book of the Year, and is a finalist for the Los Angeles Time Book Award.

Curious as to why so many cases contesting the doctrine of "separate but equal" involved trains and buses, Mia Bay went back to the sources with some basic questions: How did travel segregation begin? Why were so many of those who challenged it in court women?

Register now to hear Dr. Bay's scholarly insights on the history (and the future) of equity, inclusion, diversity, and access in transportation.
