Weekly service is a great way to get involved, meet new people and make a difference
! Choose from a wide range of service opportunities including tutoring children, mentoring high school students, engaging with senior citizens and getting to know those experiencing homelessness. Weekly service is a
ten-week
commitment
over a semester,
works with your schedule, and transportation is provided!
For students interested in voluntary weekly service:
- Registration opens on Wednesday, January 22 at 9:00 am
- Registration closes on Friday, January 24 at 5:00 pm

must attend a Service 2.0 Workshop. A wide variety of options are available to fulfill this requirement.

Deadline Extended for CSSA's 2020
Summer in the City Internship Program
|
|
The deadline to apply for the 2020 Summer in the City Internship has been extended to next Thursday, January 30!
The Summer in the City Internship
opportunities cover the topics of
homelessness, advocacy, service, solidarity and social change.
Nine internships will enable qualified students to explore the systems and structures behind many of the current social issues of our times.
This ten-week, full-time, immersive experience
will place students with a
community organization in Cleveland
involved in advocacy work to address these social issues. Students will use their internship experience to prepare a research project for the organization that promotes social change. Interns also receive a stipend for their work. Internships are open to all
undergraduate and graduate students.

Tutor for Carroll Reads Early Literacy Program
|
|
Carroll Reads
is a federally-funded tutoring program aimed at helping children in grades K-3 develop reading skills. If you are looking for a
paid work-study position,
this is a great opportunity to work with young children in the community.
Responsibilities Include:
- Conducting one-on-one tutoring sessions with students using scripted STEP literacy materials provided by CSSA
- Assisting children to improve their reading skills and abilities to reach grade level expectations
- Documenting each students’ weekly progress
- Regularly reviewing student data with the Carroll Reads Site Coordinator to gauge the effectiveness of the literacy intervention

Applications Open for a CEEP Fellowship for 2020!
|
The Campus Election Engagement Project (CEEP) is funding a fellow to assist with
voter engagement at JCU.
The fellow will work with JCU staff to lead voter registration, education, and engagement on campus in preparation for the 2020 elections. The fellow will receive a $500 stipend for the position. CEEP provides an orientation, training support and guidance. The position is for
spring 2020 with the potential of extending through Fall 2020.

"At JCU, service often becomes a part of the schedule, written into the plans for a lot of students. As semesters go on, and busy weeks pass by, riding along to service in the John Carroll vans can become very routine. Serving at a site, which for me in this case was elementary school tutoring at The Intergenerational School, becomes normal. Myself and 6 other girls buzz into the doors on your average Monday morning. We enter through the hallways and almost always turn the wrong way or question which way to go to get to the rooms we need to in the building, even after weeks of coming there. Once we sign in and put on our name tags, then we are good to go select students to work with from our various assigned classrooms. We pull child after child into our little reading room, asking them about their day and what books they like to read, and where they’d like to sit during our time together. We ask if they’d like to have the book read to them or if they would like to read to us. We cater to them. Partially because they deserve the choice, but also because we don’t know. We don’t know who can read and what they can read and it’s unpredictable.
One thing the other tutors and I are always astounded by is the unknown of what each child is capable of. Sometimes the smallest one reads us the chapter book. Or the one who was misbehaving in class is snuggled up next to us just soaking in the time where they get to have someone read to them. And I think.. And I reflect.. And I question.. Just like the other girls and I question our route to the classrooms each week. I question how these children got here. How they each have their own journey. How they learn. How they function. Who they are. It’s beautiful that we’re all a little different, that there is no predictability. It keeps us on our toes and gives us the capacity to keep growing and growing AND growing (even when and especially if we don’t want to). It challenges us to think outside of what our typical thoughts might lead us to believe. I think this is what it means to be a mentor, a tutor, or a participant in service. It doesn’t mean you have all the answers. But it means you care. You think of that individual you are with and you are open to the surprises that they bring and the joy that the two of you can share. And you keep questioning. You think about how they have gotten to where they are, but you savor the moment you are in. You pay attention to what you can do for them, but you are also open to the lessons they may teach you in the process. You stay aware of what you know about each person and how they struggle but you challenge yourself to not put limits on what they can accomplish. It’s a balancing act.. as are most things in life. But the most important part is that you care. And that you love. Love is so important. And as we drive away from another semester of service and we close out our time, I still reflect on this. On how different each child was. On the questions and the surprises. And I let myself be in awe of this experience. I let myself be in awe of the fact that I simply just care -- and that’s enough."
