MESSAGE FROM MISSION ADVANCEMENT
...the Holy Spirit does not deal in spam!
Dear Friends,

During this season of Lent, we are often reminded of the importance of prayer. Sometimes we see that as intercessory prayer when we ask for graces and blessings for those in need. And certainly these sisters and brothers are many, especially those in Ukraine, Russia and Poland; the homeless in our midst; those who are spiritually lost.

Prayer is also listening to the inner counsel and wisdom of the Holy Spirit. But we also have "vocal irritants"--opportunities to extend our car warranties, or get a great deal on carpet shampooing, or a request to donate to XYZ charity. Probably everyone reading this has registered with the "do not call list website" and/or greets a cellular call marked "probable spam" with disdain.

The Holy Spirit is inviting us to recognize that every "probable spam" or "scam likely" message can be an opportunity to change devices and to offer a listening ear to the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not a spammer! You never know where this might lead...

The Sisters of Notre Dame carry you in special prayer as we journey together toward Easter, asking God to open our ears for messages of peace. Thank you again for being such loyal and generous friends... The contents of this egram illustrate some of the impact of your donations, especially to our Life & Ministry Fund. Thank you!

Blessings always,
Director of Mission Advancement Services

PS--Perhaps this Act of Consecration of Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary may be a source of inspiration for you...

FROM THE CALIFORNIA GRAPEVINE
A mobile chapel in downtown Los Angeles
Sr. Judeen Julier recently shared a unqiue experience as a chaplain: “Construction at California Hospital Medical Center means that the chapel is unavailable. So I did a 'mini service' nine times on Ash Wednesday. It started at 7:30 a.m. with a service in the main lobby to accommodate the night shift leaving, and then continuing every half hour on each of the eight nursing floors.  I took my 'rolling chapel' to the waiting area on each floor so that nurses and other staff members could participate. The mini-service included a recorded Lenten gathering song, my 'short homily,' handouts for reflection during the 40 days of Lent, the distribution of ashes and a closing song." Necessity and creativity are the mother of invention!
Good wishes during Catholic Sisters Week
The SNDs at Notre Dame Center gratefully received flowers and good wishes from La Reina middle schoolers! On the far right, Sr. Joan Schlotfeldt and Sr. Anna Maria Vasquez share the joy of the moment...
"When I was in need...you cared for me..."

Several recent projects have provided opportunities to reach out to the homeless. On the left, Sr. Joann Schlarbaum, Sr. Rebekah Kennedy and Sr. Joan Schlotfeldt check out underwear and socks that the SNDs donated to those served by Lutheran Social Services. On the right, SND Associates Lisa Stupar, Jen Coito, Annabelle Gordon, Fili Reynoso and Jenny Ocegueda-Reynosa offer a blessing over bag lunches for those who were counted in last month's homeless survey.

Sr. Shirley Marie McGovern, shown on the left, writes to 7 inmates from across the USA every month.  Several inmates are incarcerated for life while others will be released after serving their sentence. Like her colleagues on the Restorative Justice team, Sr. Shirley embraces Jesus’ invitation to walk with the incarcerated. But the earth is also in need of care. Sr. Colette Theobald and Sr. Rita Marie Schroeder recently delivered more than 100 tomato plants to the students at Our Lady of Peace School in North Hills. They spoke to the students about Pope Francis' invitation to protect creation, and provided instructions on how to care for the plants. The students were excited to take their plants home and see what grows!
Cyber-spiritual nuggets from a mom's perspective

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, SND Associate Jen Coito regularly shares her unique spiritual perspectives through various blog posts. As the Associate Director of Mission Advancement for the California region of the SNDs, Jen brings creativity, energy, and passion to the annual Nun Run, and many other ventures. How do you think your generation is capable of changing the world?
"I think Gen Z is capable of changing the world's mindset to become more inclusive and open-minded. Growing up with technology has definitely changed the way my generation thinks and interacts with each other. We are able to connect with millions of other teens around the world, which gives us an appreciation for different cultures and perspectives." Read more
