Making Sure No Pet Goes Hungry
Second Chance Continues Long Standing Partnership with Local Food Pantries
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (May 28, 2021) – As the pandemic took hold, displacing workers, many pet owners suddenly had to figure out how they were going to feed themselves and feed their pets. More people than ever were turning to local food pantries for help, many for the first time. Second Chance Animal Services Pet Food Pantry Program was there to make sure no pet went hungry
Second Chance founded the pet food pantry many years ago, distributing pet food to area food pantries to help keep pets out of shelters and with the people they love.
Wachusett Food Pantry has been working with Second Chance for several years. Wachusett Food Pantry Board Member Nancy Pierce underscores the importance of providing pet food. “We had heard from our recipients in the past that they would rather feed their pets first before themselves. Donations as a whole had been low during 2019/2020 with the pandemic, and we were seeing an increase in our distribution activity monthly. Pet food donations are not something often thought about as folks think about donating to a food pantry, so the need is always there.”
Second Chance CEO Sheryl Blancato has seen pet food distributions to local food pantries increase significantly over the past year. “We are now working with more pantries and providing additional pet food to each pantry.”
Blancato is grateful to supporters for donations of food and other supplies to keep the program running during this critical time. “Our greatest need was and still is plastic bags to prepare pet food for distribution. Donations of large bags of pet food are repackaged by volunteers into smaller bags for distribution so they can help all the pet owners who need help feeding their pets.”
As the pandemic challenged local pantries to serve more people, they also faced the challenge of who was going to do the work as health concerns sidelined some volunteers. A group of Second Chance volunteers stepped up to deliver pet food to the organizations who were unable to pick up food from the distribution site.
Pierce says Wachusett Food Pantry is grateful for the program. “We know our recipients and their furry loved ones appreciate all the bags and cans of food...and YES TREATS that we are able to provide to them.”
Despite the brighter days ahead, many pets and pet owners still face food insecurity. If you would like to help, donations can be dropped off or sent to the Second Chance Adoption Center, 111 Young Road, East Brookfield, MA 01515. Monetary donations are also needed to run the program. Second Chance encourages local food pantries to email info@secondchanceanimals.org for more information on participating in the program. Businesses interested in helping can email development@secondchanceanimals.org for more information.

Welcoming New Citizens
On July 2nd only, watch and be inspired by a citizen naturalization ceremony on the Village common. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will present candidates to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and they will pledge their Oath of Allegiance to the United States for the very first time.
Firing the Cannon
An exciting feature of the Independence Day festivities is the firing of our reproduction cannon. There were 46 militia units armed with cannons in Massachusetts in the 1830s and one of them was located in here in Sturbridge. These units fired their cannons on militia training days and during celebrations, like the 4th of July. Our cannon has a cast iron barrel and is mounted on a carriage made by Village artisans.
“Declaring Independence” Returns
Two times during the day, six costumed interpreters will render the words of the Declaration line by line, assisted by a narrator who sets these words in their rich historical context. Some lines will be familiar to all; others – especially the many grievances that justified altering an ancient government – will receive background and commentary. As the re-enactors dramatize these 18th-century words and ideas, the narrator will draw out their meaning and challenge the audience to consider their relevance and power for today.
“Declaring Independence” is part of a multi-year joint initiative of Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area and the American Antiquarian Society to engage citizens in the ideas and transformative potential of the Declaration of Independence. This initiative includes researching the ways in which independence was conceived and debated within colonial communities in the years leading up to 1776; tracing how the Declaration’s role evolved in American communities; and considering the challenges and potential of this living document for Americans today.
