When Alexandra Renee Mohamed lost her home in the December 11 tornadoes, the support she received from the WKU School of Nursing and Allied Health impacted her decision to return to college in January. Almost a year later, she will graduate on Friday with a Master of Science in Nursing degree, and then begin a career in labor and delivery.

WKU senior reflects on college journey through art
“I had to sit down and get pretty deep [during the pandemic] and really try to find myself and my true purpose. That is where the quote comes from. ‘I can’t leave art alone,’” expressed Tayshaun Hassell, a senior from Franklin. “It is something I have always done, my entire life. It has always been a peace - a tranquil place to go to. It has always been consistent for me. It never ran away from me. It has always been one of my greatest gifts.”
Grad student uses interesting approach to pick career path
Graduate student Darby Bowser, from Westmoreland, Tennessee, did not know what she wanted to do after high school. “All I knew was I wanted to work in the business world, and I wanted to wear cute suits to work every day,” she said. When choosing her major freshman year, accounting was at the top of the list alphabetically. She chose this major with the full intent of changing it later. However, she fell in love with her accounting classes freshman year and never changed her major. On Friday, she will graduate with her Masters in Accountancy and Data Analytics.

Construction management added to KYTC scholarship program
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is expanding its two civil engineering scholarship programs to now include a third construction management scholarship. These programs provide tuition assistance, hands-on experience and guaranteed employment after graduation. “It's a great time to be a civil engineering or construction management student at Western Kentucky University,” said Jason Wilson, Civil Engineering & Construction Management Program Coordinator.

View from the Hill
WKU senior Maria Wells from nearby Lewisburg comes from a family full of WKU alums. WKU was the last place she wanted to go because as she says, she thought to do something awesome, she had to do something different. But as WKU’s Amy Bingham tells us in this week’s View from the Hill, that wasn’t the case at all.
