Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced several new programs for farmers, ranchers and producers during his address to the American Farm Bureau Federation convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Secretary noted that while overall farm incomes have reached record highs, nearly half of farm households reported negative incomes.
He says the newly announced programs, as well as others enacted by the Biden administration, are intended to ensure that producers are not only more productive but also more profitable.

The California Dairy Research Foundation and University of California, Davis CLEAR Center announced the release of a new analysis of methane reduction progress.
The paper, authored by researchers at UC Davis affiliated with UC Agriculture and Natural Resources, concludes that efforts are on track to achieve the state’s world-leading target for reducing dairy methane emissions by 40% by 2030.

Roughage is an important part of the dairy cow’s diet. Today’s research is more aligned with the use of plant-based feed resources. In a recent study published in the journal Fermentation, researchers describe how mulberry silage improves the health and performance of dairy cows.
With the ban on in-feed antibiotics, the feed industry is on the lookout for feed resources that confer animal health while maintaining high levels of performance. Plant-based products are rich in bioactive compounds valuable in boosting animal health.

Sales of dairy products with a positioning in terms of gut health, digestion, and immune support have experienced significant increases, as preventative health and nutrition have been catalysts for their popularity. According to Euromonitor International’s Voice of the Consumer: Health and Nutrition Survey (2022), 63% of global consumers responded that having a strong immune system defines what being healthy means for them.
However, label claims such as high protein, organic, and no added sugar are also growing as consumers increasingly view food as medicine.
