  As I mentioned here this past week, we have released Quarter 1 Student Progress reports. Below is the information our parents need to access their student's results if they have not done so already. If you currently have a student at Lake Nona and have yet to review your child's Progress Report, please do so as soon as possible keeping in mind our Learning Lab opportunities as featured herein.
This week we continue to spotlight several of our virtual Knight clubs for this first semester. We offer such a wide variety of clubs & organizations at Lake Nona and I hope that even if only participating virtually for now, all of our Knights will find something they enjoy.

Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis are hosting the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration! First Lady Casey DeSantis' Hispanic Heritage History Month essay contest is open to all Florida students in grades 4-12. Each student will submit one essay no longer than 500 words based on this year's theme. Three winners will be selected: one elementary (grades 4-5), one middle school student (grades 6-8), and one high school student (grades 9-12). Winners will receive a 4-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by Florida Prepaid College Foundation. Essay entries can be mailed or submitted electronically. Winner will be notified after October 10, 2020.
All entries must be received by 5:00 p.m. September 25, 2020. Entries should be mailed to Volunteer Florida, Hispanic Heritage month Committee, 1545 Raymond Diehl Rd., Suite 250, Tallahassee, Florida 32308. Contestants are responsible for all shipping costs. Vehicle and Pedestrian Safety
|
The safety of our students is of the utmost importance. Students who walk or ride a bicycle to and from school are especially vulnerable, as the potential for critical injury or death is more likely if they were to be struck by a vehicle. According to the organization Smart Growth America (https://smartgrowthamerica.org/dangerous-by-design/), Florida ranks #1 in the nation for pedestrian deaths, a ranking it has held for several years.

With an increasing number of people moving to Florida every day, it's more important than ever that we all do our part to make sure our children are safe when walking or riding their bicycles. The following Florida statutes apply to pedestrians, bicyclists, and/or motor vehicles.
F.S. 316.130(3) No walking on roadway where sidewalks are provided, unless required by other circumstances
F.S. 316.130(8) No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield
F.S. 316.2065(3)(a) A bicycle may not be used to carry more persons at one time than the number for which it is designed or equipped
F.S. 316.2065(3)(d) Bicycle rider or passenger under 16 years old must wear helmet
F. S. 316.2065(10) Rider on a sidewalk or crosswalk shall yield to pedestrians
F.S. 316.130(7) Driver shall yield, and stop if need be to yield, to a pedestrian in a crosswalk
F.S. 316.130(9) No passing any vehicle stopped at any crosswalk to permit a pedestrian to cross
F.S. 316.074(1) Driver shall obey instructions of any official traffic control device, unless otherwise directed by a police officer
F.S. 316.072(3) Unlawful for any person willfully to fail or refuse to comply with any lawful order or direction of any law enforcement officer

Knight Virtual Clubs: Part 2

 Have you spent the five minutes it takes to fill out your U. S. Census questionnaire? The deadline is September 30th and your count really matters. The more people who are counted in our area, the more it helps leaders decide how billions of dollars are allocated to support schools, roads, hospitals and healthcare, fire and emergency response services and many more programs.
