Call to Artists
The City of Sacramento, Sacramento Office of Arts + Culture (OAC), a division of the City of Sacramento Convention and Cultural Services Department, and Department of Public Works (DPW), Office of the Director, invites artists to submit their qualifications to design vinyl wraps for two commission locations in midtown Sacramento, each with three electric vehicle (EV) charger stations. The work is commissioned by the EVgo Fast Charging company in partnership with the City of Sacramento. We are excited about this public-private partnership and look forward to involving artists in City sustainability and innovation projects. Once completed, the work will be owned by EVgo, and will be installed for a minimum of two years.
Project Overview
This project will allow two selected artists to engage with the City of Sacramento, EVgo, area businesses, and residential communities to use creative placemaking techniques to design a series of wrapped curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at two sites in midtown Sacramento (approximately 926 22nd Street and 506 14th Street). Each selected artist will be commissioned to design vinyl wraps for three EV charging stations at one site.
This RFQ is being released during the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to provide two local artists with public art commissions and to contribute as artist collaborators to ongoing sustainability efforts in the City of Sacramento. The timeline is very tight to complete this project. Artists should consider this design challenge in the context of the location, designs working together with three boxes, and proximity of viewer (up close as a pedestrian and further away usually driving by in a vehicle). Project stakeholders realize limited community engagement may be possible given shelter in place restrictions and the short timeline. Artists selected for this opportunity must be able to complete their designs no later than August 2020.
Eligibility
The project is open to experienced professional artists. The final commission will be awarded based on the stated “Artist Selection Criteria”. Previous experience with public art or site-specific art is a benefit but is not required for selection. Professional artists living in the Sacramento area and studio artists interested in learning more about public art are encouraged to apply.

OAC Grantees Adapt to COVID-19
Many of our grantees have been working on new or different ways to continue bringing quality programming and activities to the Sacramento community; here are some updates and highlights!
It is official! Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 19th edition of the Sacramento French Film Festival will be virtual. Held over 10 days, June 19-28, 2020, it will present about 10 new feature films otherwise unavailable in the U.S. that people will be able to watch on-demand, from the comfort of their homes. Despite social distancing, we will keep our event festive and convivial with virtual Q&A sessions & partnerships with local restaurants.
Imagined just a few weeks ago by the Crocker’s Director of Education, Stacey Shelnut-Hendrick, and conceptualized and organized by the Crocker’s Block by Block outreach team,
COLOR US HOPEFUL
is designed to bring the community together through art. As part of its ongoing support of local creatives, the Crocker gathered fifteen local artists of diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and gender/lifestyle backgrounds to create a coloring book that everyone can celebrate and relate to. Each page is presented in both English and Spanish, with a photo and description of the local artist who created it. The back of the book is filled with creative resources and tips for artful exploration that everyone can follow, even during social distancing.
Moving into Summer 2020, we will be expanding our programming and offering a refined edition of our Academy Series beginning June 8. Any Given Child Sacramento Teaching Artists Residency Training Program
While Covid-19 shut down classroom teaching in all of the County’s school districts in mid-March, a cohort of teaching artists came together to develop and hone their skills in providing K-8 teaching residencies for Sacramento area students. This month, the Office of Arts & Culture offered its first virtual professional development course for teaching artists, Residency Planning for Students, taught by Kennedy Center arts coaches Melanie Rick and Sean Layne of Focus 5, Inc.
Over a two week period, nine teaching artists, representing dance, theater, visual arts, music and spoken word, participated in a virtual class setting to develop new or update existing residency curricula to offer either online or in the classroom during the upcoming school year. Whether or not Sacramento schools will allow artists in the classroom next school year, there artists continue to be integral to the educational experience.
A priority for Any Given Child Sacramento in 2020-21 is to provide professional development and training for both artists and classroom teachers to create arts learning experiences that are relevant, innovative, and develop students’ knowledge and build teachers’ capacity to teach with and through the arts. The bulk of our training will be virtual this year, allowing for many more artists and teachers to take part.
To use a metaphor provided by Melanie and Sean, each artist has a unique key to unlock the door of learning for every student. All that is needed is to reshape those keys in ways that fit the needs of the students and teachers with whom they will work. Thoughtful residency design helps artists to reshape their keys in myriad ways to satisfy multiple educational needs. Our goal to provide the tools each artist needs to open those doors.

Update from the Sacramento Film & Media Office
The film office is working behind the scenes during this coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Since March 13, we have been working at home creating the new website, building a locations library and taking weekly calls with State of California, US and worldwide entertainment industry professionals. Through partnerships with studios and unions, new guidelines for safe production are beginning to emerge. We are keeping a close eye on places that
are beginning to open such as New Zealand, Australia, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Germany and soon Georgia in the United States. Sacramento Film + Media will take direction for location production from the California Film Commission once the Sacramento County Public Health Stay at Home Order has lifted. Until then, please know that we are working tirelessly to make Sacramento poised to safely begin permitting film and media. We continue to field calls from stakeholders looking to film in our area. We will give updates as guidelines take shape and move towards opening the entertainment industry.
