OPPORTUNITY JUNCTION
PUTTING DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION INTO ACTION ON THE GROUND
In the wake of the social struggles America is going through, a lot of workforce programs sent out letters about how concerned they were with the issues of improving diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in their organizations. This is a good thing, but very few of them talked about how they were going to transform their organizations using DEI action plans. Opportunity Junction which is a long standing client agency of mine and a highly effective and innovative workforce program, put plans and actions behind their words. Click here to see how they are addressing these issues.

MY MESSAGE TO YOU IN THIS CHALLENGING TIME
As the pandemic drags on, it is so easy to become depressed and burnt out. Workforce development professionals are notorious for wanting to help others so much, that we often neglect taking care of ourselves in the process. This can lead to a lack of energy, optimism and limit our ability to be as effective as possible so we can help job seekers. This does not happen overnight. It is a slow, creeping and insidious process. If we aren't energetic and optimistic we can't help depressed job seekers get a positive outlook so they can stay motivated to make employment progress and job hunt in this challenging labor market. In this way, our own depression and burnout become barriers to employment for ourselves and the people we serve.
The pandemic has created collective trauma and this challenges our ability to stay positive and optimistic. We are unlikely to return to our pre-pandemic more positive state of mind until this crisis is over, but we can do things to fight against it and minimize its damage to our spirit and soul. The ability to do that is the new skill that we need to develop as workforce development professionals in this new abnormal.
It is not easy. I am personally challenged to take care of myself, but I can say that I am making progress. I am watching how much I tend to over work. I am definitely doing more exercise and eating healthier. I am avoiding things that depress me as much as possible. I am taking action to improve the social impact of my work which rejuvenates me. While I am not where I want to be yet, I am making progress. But it is a constant struggle. I hope you will join me in that struggle so that we as workforce development professionals can continue to have the greatest impact possible on the people and communities we serve. We have so much to offer them if we can take care of ourselves. Take care of yourself! See you in the next issue!
