Dear Families,
It was wonderful having some of our Juniors and Seniors on campus last week, and we look forward to welcoming more students on campus this week. We are happy to finally publish our 2020-2021 Upper School Family Handbook. We apologize for the delay. The most pertinent change to families is the updated grade scale (found on page 56 of the Family Handbook). The grade scale for both middle and high school is now a 10 point scale. For middle school, a 59% is now failing (previously 69% was failing). For high school, in accordance with state law, a 69% is still failing, but with the 10 point grade scale there will no longer be a D grade range. This change has been implemented across all Great Hearts Texas schools. Please read the Handbook for more details.
In addition to the Handbook, we are publishing an Addendum to the Handbook concerning online assessments. Please read this addendum for important information on expectations for online assessments and grade deductions due to missed online assessments.

As Distance Learning presents new challenges, we have decided to send Progress Reports to all families rather than only sending Deficiency Notices to families whose students are in danger of failing the quarter. Expect to receive your student(s) Progress Report(s) early this week.

Schedule Changes
Beginning Monday, September 21 we will no longer have a Block Schedule on the Thursday and Friday of full weeks of school. Instead, students will attend all 6 classes each day of the week.
Also beginning Monday, September 21, the Distance Learning Class Schedule will undergo an additional small change. Each period will begin 5 minutes earlier and end 5 minutes earlier to better align all student schedules.

On Campus Attendance
Students who elected in-person learning must attend school in-person. If they are not attending classes
in-person, they will be marked absent for the whole day unless a parent submits a medical note
to Ms. Weatherton. (Tamara.Weatherton@GreatHeartsIrving.org). If you elected Brick and Mortar but would like to switch to Distance Learning until the end of the first quarter, please also email Ms. Weatherton.

Carline
The carline routes are the same as last year. You will receive carline placards with your student’s name and grade on it on the first day of school. These placards are required for carline every day, as students will wait in their 8th period classrooms until they are called.
Drop-off: 7:30-7:55 AM
Pickup: 3:35-4:00 PM
Early Release Pickup: 1:40-2:00 PM

Student Walkers
Student Walkers must complete a Student Walker form. Students are only allowed to walk off campus at the end of the day if they live within a two mile radius of the school. Contact Mr. Malone to complete the Student Walker form at Patrick.Malone@GreatHeartsIrving.org.

Student Driver Registration
All student drivers must register with the school. The registration form requires both a parent and student signature, as well as supporting documents.

Homework Club
Homework Club is designed to provide a place for upper school scholars to complete homework, receive peer tutoring, and quietly socialize with friends in a structured, supervised environment. Homework Club will be available for students on campus beginning Monday, September 21. For questions, please contact your Campus Coordinator, Shanda Stanley, at Programs@GreatHeartsIrving.org.

SAT for Seniors
On Wednesday, September 23rd Seniors will take the SAT on campus. Students should get a good night's sleep Tuesday night, eat a good breakfast Wednesday morning, and arrive on campus by 7:45am.
After the SAT, students are invited to remain on campus for the Senior Lunch Celebration from
11:45am to 1:30pm!

Junior Parent Night
Parents and students of the Class of 2022 are invited to a night with our college counselor via Zoom on Tuesday, September 29th from 7-8pm. The evening will outline parent, student, and counselor roles as students prepare for life after high school.

Financial Aid Night
On Tuesday, October 6th, 11th and 12th Grade students and parents are invited to attend our Financial Aid Night. We will hear from a Trinity University Financial Aid Officer who will explain the college financial aid process. Sign up now!

Virtual College Fair
On Friday, September 25 from 2-4pm College Counselors from our sister schools in San Antonio in conjunction with SARN will be hosting a Virtual College Fair. See the link below for a list a colleges represented at this event!
