December 9 - December 18, 2022

Episcopalians don't generally claim to be the one true church, the singular people who got it right for all time. We are usually content to trust that our way of following Jesus is a good way, among other good ways, by the grace of God to follow our Lord. At our best, this is a kind of trusting (even assured) humility: this is the way of life by which God has saved and is saving me. That can be true without claiming that this is the only way God saves people. At other times, though, it can threaten to be a sort of lassitude: because God may work in countless different ways to bring to completion the redemption of the world, we might hold back from full commitment to the way God is saving us.
But openness does not need to be an enemy of commitment. There are gifts in the particular that can only be fully experienced within a commitment to a certain way of being and loving. We know this already. There are joys in marriage that are different from the joys of dating, gifts in a vocation that are different from the gifts of a gig. In the Episcopal Church, we embody that commitment partially through the rite of Confirmation. Confirmation (or Reception, for those who have been confirmed in another tradition) is a mature affirmation of faith, before the Bishop as symbol of the church universal. It is also a sacramental commitment, not to the one true path to God for all time, but to embodying as fully as we can one way of following Jesus, and with one group of people trying to follow with us. That commitment and the sacramental aspect of it matters.
If you have not been confirmed, or if you have been confirmed elsewhere and the Episcopal Church has come to feel like your spiritual home, I invite you to come explore Confirmation with us. The Bishop will be with us on February 26 of 2023, and we'll run a confirmation/reception class from January 8 until he comes. The class will meet on Sundays over lunch after the 11:00 service every Sunday except January 29 (the Feast of Saint Paul and the Annual Meeting). All are welcome, especially those considering Confirmation, Reception, or a Reaffirmation of Faith. But since we'll be using a book and getting food, we do need you to sign up. Come if you want to know more about the Episcopal Church; come if you need a refresher of the basics; come if you've been around for a bit and are ready to deepen your commitment. (If it counts as a sweetener, those preparing for Confirmation or Reception are eligible to vote at the annual meeting.)

Saint Paul's Nursery is OPEN this Sunday
9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
|
We are pleased to announce that the Saint Paul’s nursery is open for children 6 months to 4 years of age. The nursery will be available this Sunday morning beginning at 9:30 AM to allow parents to attend formation.
We are currently understaffed in the Nursery and are in the process of hiring two nursery caregivers. Because we cannot open the nursery without two trained caregivers, we are communicating the nursery schedule to parents weekly. If you are not receiving our nursery email, please contact the parish office. If you can recommend a candidate for our nursery, please let us know that as well.
For more information, please contact Kim Butler, Director of Children, Youth, and Intergenerational Ministries.

Formation and The Friendly Beasts
Preparation for our Children's Christmas Program
10 AM - 10:45 AM, The St. Patrick's Rm, CMC
|
This Sunday we will begin preparing for our annual Christmas program that will be performed during the 11 AM service on Sunday, December 18th. We will be preparing the children for this wonderful program during formation on the Sundays of December 4th, December 11th, and December 18th. This Sunday we will begin assigning roles and picking out costumes.
The performance gives the chance for the children to dress up and tell the story of Jesus’ birth through the
eyes of the animals in the stable. It is a beautiful, sweet song and story and such a gift to the congregation.
It requires no speaking parts so it is also low stress for the kids. We are very excited that Coleman Graham will be returning to direct our program. Please let us know as soon as possible if your child will be participating. Contact Kim Butler at kbutler@saintpauls.org or text at (706) 833-8541.

Quiet (Half) Day
Wednesday, Dec. 14
9:00 AM - 12 Noon, Chapel of St. Peter & St. Paul
|
At just the time when life becomes most hectic for many of us, the Church tells us to slow down, wait faithfully, and prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. How can we wait while we run from appointment and errand to appointment and errand?
This Advent at Saint Paul’s, we’ll hold quiet (half-) days to give us all a chance to take a breath and wait in the presence of God. Our last quiet day is scheduled Wednesday, December 14; 9 am to 12:00 noon, beginning in the Chapel.

Lectio at Lunch
Thursdays, 12 Noon, The Berlin Room
|
Join us for lunch and a Bible study – we've made it easy!
This small group format begins with lunch. As we continue sharing a meal, three biblical lessons are read by aloud by members of the group, followed by a reflection from Brian McLaren’s We Make the Road by Walking. We conclude our time together engaging with the reflection. Much of the work of the Holy Spirit in formation is in forming relationship. As the title suggests we make the road by walking together. We invite you to join this small group as your schedule allows.
