What’s in the infrastructure plan for rural America?
The U.S. Senate’s passage of the more than 2,700-page Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act offers many important provisions that those in rural America were seeking. The bill provides $548 billion in additional spending. When combined with existing baseline infrastructure spending, total funding for infrastructure will be approximately $944 billion over five years and $1.2 trillion over eight years.

More from the ADSA 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting
Please join us on August 18, 2021, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. (EDT) for our first webinar in the ADSA 2021 Annual Meeting Fall Webinar Series: "The Future of Probiotics."
Probiotic bacteria, particularly lactobacilli, play an important role in human health. Recently, the lactobacilli taxonomy underwent extensive revision, including the addition of 23 new genera, which will have a significant impact on future research and regulatory approaches. Fermented dairy products are an important delivery system for probiotic cultures. The pairing of probiotic cultures with fermented dairy products appears to have synergistic benefits for gut health and allows new opportunities for optimization. In addition, prophages have been shown to play an important role in the ecology of probiotic cultures in vivo. In this symposium, we will explore recent developments in understanding Lactobacillus taxonomy, the role of prophages, and the synergism of probiotic cultures and milk and the effect of this synergism on activity in the human digestive tract. Speakers include M. Ganzle, M. Marco, and P. van Pijkeren.
This webinar is the first of six in the Fall Webinar Series. If you registered for the 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting, you already have access to all six; check your email for a promotional code that was emailed separately. Join us for the 40th ADSA Discover Conference on NASEM Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle
Due to continued COVID-19 related travel and gathering uncertainties coupled with delays with the NASEM publication the dates for this 40th ADSA Discover, NASEM Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle, were changed to August 30-September 2, 2021. The conference is being held as a hybrid program. Interest has been very high and both the in-person and virtual participation options have sold out. A waiting list is being maintained for both live in-person and live virtual participation registrations, but we encourage all potential registrants to consider the Recordings Only option. This provides convenient access to recordings of speaker presentations for viewing on your own schedule. Click here for “Online Registration” and current options. We are looking forward to having you participate in our August program. We are here to help you however we can with questions and requests for support. Contact conference coordinator Molly Kelley or conference director Larry Miller with questions.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM, previously known as NRC) anticipates the 2021 release of the eighth revised edition of “Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle,” the world’s most highly cited reference on dairy cattle feeding. The expectation is that final release of all chapters will be after this conference. This DiscoverSM Conference will focus on the scientific advancements in dairy cattle feeding used to revise the 2001 edition. The NASEM subcommittee members will address the substantive changes in the nutrient requirements and the conceptual approaches used to make those changes. Participants will hear reports on areas with significant knowledge gaps that still prevent more accurate prediction of the nutrient requirements. Emphasizing the interactive spirit of Discover Conferences, the agenda will incorporate structured small group discussions, including a demonstration of the software and focused discussions with the speakers. The program will bridge the fundamental science to applied dairy cattle feeding.
Conference Topics
- Feed Intake, Fats, Carbohydrates, and Energy
- Proteins and Amino Acids
- Minerals, Vitamins, and Water
- Dry Cows, Calves, and Replacement Heifers
- Using the Model
- Application of the New Requirements
Expanding to a hybrid conference format allows us to offer meaningful collaboration among our colleagues throughout the world in the manner that best meets individual needs. We hope that you will join us for this redesigned event and celebrate our collective resilience and dedication to forging connections without boundaries.
Please note: ARPAS will allow up to 15 Continuing Education Units based on contact hours and content for ARPAS members participating in this Discover Conference®. Participating ARPAS members may obtain credit for their participation by using the ARPAS website.

Conference Reminder - join us for the 41st Discover Conference: “Health Management of Calves: From Intrauterine Life to Successful Weaning”
Make your plans now to attend the 41ST ADSA DISCOVER CONFERENCESM ON FOOD ANIMAL AGRICULTURE - Health Management of Calves: From Intrauterine Life to Successful Weaning. It will be a hybrid conference with the in-person meeting being held October 25-28, 2021 at Eaglewood Resort & Spa in Itasca, IL. Registration options include in-person participation at the Eaglewood Resort & Spa, virtual participation, and a non-participation option which simply gives registrants access to the conference recordings.
The pre-weaning period is critical for the growth and future productivity of replacement animals. However, dairy cattle producers and their veterinarians continue to face important, ongoing, and emerging challenges regarding calf management from intrauterine life to the time of weaning. This conference will explore the many changes in dairy calf management practices, and research conducted over the last decade.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Discover 41 participants, and in particular graduate students, are encouraged to submit a short abstract that describes new and innovative research findings pertaining to one of the five conference topics:
- Fetal Development and Early Life
- Calf Health
- Preweaning Nutrition
- Transition to the Ruminant Calf
- Animal Welfare and Ethics
The call for abstracts is open on the DC41 website. Deadline to submit a title and brief abstract: 11:59 p.m. CDT on August 1, 2021.
Abstract presentations are limited to in-person attendees and will take place in poster format on Tuesday, October 26. This will be a unique opportunity for scientists and allied industry worldwide to interact and discuss the latest scientific findings without boundaries. Abstracts should consist of original, completed work that has not been accepted for publication in a journal, but prior presentation as either an oral or poster presentation within 12 months of the start of the Discover 41 meeting (October 2021) is acceptable. Additional details on abstract submission are available on the website.
Please note: ARPAS will allow up to 18 Continuing Education Units based on contact hours and content for ARPAS members participating in this Discover Conference. Participating ARPAS members may obtain credit for their participation by using the ARPAS website.
