A Message from Mayor Moench
Dear Bridgewater Resident,

I hope this message finds you and your family in good health. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed so many things about our everyday life this year and now, with so many important elections looming, we can no longer vote in the way we are accustomed.

Understandably, some residents have expressed some confusion and concern and with ballots starting to head toward mailboxes and we want to make sure that you are equipped to exercise your right to vote.

No county or municipality has the authority to supersede the Governor's decision to hold an almost entirely vote-by-mail election this year so we have no choice but to adapt so you can make sure your voice is heard.

We hope the graphic below is helpful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Township or your County Clerk's Office.
Thank you for taking the time to read this email. Have a safe and healthy rest of your day!

Sincerely,
Matthew C. Moench
Mayor
National POW/MIA Recognition Day
National POW/MIA Recognition Day, today, September 18th, was established in 1979 through a proclamation signed by President Jimmy Carter. Since then, each subsequent president has issued an annual proclamation commemorating the third Friday in September as National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

Please join Bridgewater in honoring those who were held captive and returned, as well as those who remain missing.

Thank you for your service to our country.
NEW RAIN GARDEN AT THE SENIOR CENTER
Bridgewater Township, in conjunction with the Somerset County Office of Emergency Management and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Department installed a beautiful new rain garden at the Bridgewater Senior Center.

The funds for this project came from a grant pertaining to green infrastructure projects for municipalities along the south branch of the Raritan River. This grant opportunity was an ideal way to introduce green infrastructure to help with hazard mitigation projects, a requirement for all of our municipalities that participate in the Somerset County Hazard Mitigation Plan.

These projects will help to collect storm-water runoff, filter out toxins before returning clean water to the environment with native plants, and help to alleviate flooding. An extra added benefit from the native plants offers food, habitat, and shelter for pollinator species.

Thank you to everyone involved!

THE SOMERSET COUNTY CLERK REPORTED – New Jersey postal customers received post cards from the United States Postal Service this week that gave incorrect information about the process for Garden State voters to cast their ballots in the 2020 general election. The cards urged voters to request vote by mail ballots early, but in New Jersey all active voters will receive ballots automatically.

“We will be mailing ballots to every active registered voter in Somerset County by October 5, and they should be received by October 10,” said Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter. “The only reason to submit a Vote by Mail ballot request is if you ballot is lost or damaged and you require a replacement.”

If voters have not received their ballot by October 10, they are encouraged to contact the Clerks’ office at (908) 231-7013 to determine if a new ballot should be mailed. Voters cannot request a second ballot if they have already submitted one.
Some More information on how Somerset County voters can participate in the 2020 General Election is available at https://www.co.somerset.nj.us/2020general

The Police have seen an uptick in scams targeting the elderly and families. Chief Paul Payne has provided the following links so residents can be informed.

To protect the officers and personnel of the Bridgewater Police Department, as well as the community from the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), we will be implementing a hybrid reporting process that allows an officer to contact you by phone (or respond directly in certain circumstances)after the incident has been reported to Somerset County Communications. Officers will contact you at the number provided to dispatch for crimes/incidents such as Harassment (Phone Calls and non-Domestic Violence), Hit and Run Accidents, Fraud and Financial Crimes, Identity Theft, Thefts, Lost Property, Criminal Mischief, Property Damage, and Threats. Please note that telephone reports are intended for offenses that do not require a police response due to violence or the need to collect evidence. The officer will confirm with the complainant that:

• This is not an emergency.
• The complainant knows that filing a false police report is a crime.
• The incident occurred within the Bridgewater Township limits.
• The complainant understands that the Bridgewater Township Police Department will review this case and may contact them if further information is needed.

After the Report is taken:

• When finished with the call, the officer will give the complainant a case number to reference at a later date and time.
• If documents are needed, such as written statements, have the complainant fax or email them to you, have the complainant bring them to the police department, or lastly, meet the complainant outside in the open.

Please note that telephone reports are intended for offenses that do not require a police response due to violence or the need to collect evidence.

This process allows the public to report crimes in which the complainant does not have access to a computer to utilize the self-reporting system located on our website.

Anyone requesting a copy of an incident report can call our Records Bureau at 908-725-4044 or email Records@bridgewaterpd.com. A copy of the report can be emailed back to the requesting party. Make sure to provide your name, phone number, email address, and case number.

Crash reports can be obtained by utilizing https://policereports.lexisnexis.com/

We will do our best to assist the public in any way we can. However we need the community to follow the recommendations of the CDC and limited their exposure risks.
